While for the most part, the songs on here ARE great, (you can't deny the fact that there are
indeed weaker songs) the album is quite repetitive and Tarja's vocals here aren't as good as later
stuff; not to mention that there is less bass here than ...And Justice for All. Certainly not a
classic by any means. Very overrated. To be fair, the guitar and keyboard work here as well as the
drumming is fantastic.

A little overrated compared to their later stuff. Honestly sounds more derivative of neo-classical oriented power metal than some of these other descriptions to me. Doesn't mean it's not still fantastic overall, though, I just prefer their days with an actual orchestra backing them.

Beautiful and wonderfully crafted, Nightwish's breakthrough showcases the band in wonderful form. Various and, at times, intricate melodies lend way to what can best be described as a blissful addiction of an album. A must for anyone who's even remotely interested in the symphonic/folk metal genre.

It's very easy to understand why this is often cited as most Nightwish fans favourite album, its incredibly good. The melodic brilliance, Tarja's astoundingly powerful and commanding voice and the operatic feel, its plain to see how Nightwish climbed to their success in both mainstream and metal circles. There are so many good songs on this CD and for only being their second album as a new Finnish band they are doing pretty good. Sleeping Sun could be the only good song on this track and everything else could be crap and I would give this CD a 4.5. Sleeping Sun is personally my favorite track by Nightwish to date.
One thing I can really say about this album is how much Tarja's voice has improved! I also think her voice is also what made me enjoy this album so much more then their first. Each song on this CD is so different from the next but they are all in the same genre and that is what I think I love the most about them. All of their songs are different but also the same and we love each one of them.

Power Metal at is best. A cd that is accesible to anyone with an open mind. Everything about this cd is spectacular with Tarja Turunen's soaring operatic vocals leading the way with Tuomas Holopainen's stong songwriting ability and overshadowing the guitars with awsome keyboard beats. thats not to say Emppu Vuorien is bad. He lays down alot of creative and heavy riffs on this cd with some sweet solos. Theres alot of interesting drum patterns from Jukka.The bass is noticeable at times with Sami droppin some cool bass lines.Overall I think this is their best cd and their highlights include the stunning Walking in the Air,Gethsemane, and The Riddler.

This is a tremendous album. From the start, it pounds with the Symphonic Power Metal it is, and what a genre to be put under. The genre alone makes it seem like it can't be anything but good. Tarja's voice has mixed reactions, but I love her opera style. Female singers might make the band awkward, but it fits well here. Great soloing and drumming, and also great deep male vocals featured on a couple of the songs. This also has an amazing ballad.
