Buy this Album! Mind Blowing... Technical. Amazing phrasing. Great riffs. Varied songs. It's a pleasure to listen to the album from start to finish and doesn't get old. The only bad thing is you have to order it from the label in England, which makes the album cost $30, but its sssoooo worth it. A must have for any serious guitar player.

Did this surpass my expectations. For some reason I was never rushing to check Govan out, probably because there was so much I was familiar with I wanted to check out first, as well as the lack of this album on Spotify. Nevertheless, I finally have, and my god. Beautiful melodies and emotion, insane shred, great compositions ranging from heavier metal-oriented jazz, to more jazz-rock to a little country song. Throughout all of this, the emotive and technically stunning guitar-work is kept at an extraordinary level, none surpassing the other. It does get a bit repetitive though.

Any fan of guitar virtuoso or otherwise guitar-centric music should hear this. Erotic Cakes is a spectacular listen. Great songwriting, varied but cohesive, and it never devolves into mindless wank like so many guitarists' records do. The drums and bass get spotlight time as well, which is great (the title track, "Ner Ner"). "Slidey Boy" and "Hangover" drag, but the rest is fantastic. "Waves," "Sevens," and "Eric" are the three strongest tracks.

Guthrie's playing is delightful to the ears all by itself - in terms of fluidity and technique, he is in a league of his own. One is left wondering if there is any aspect of the guitar he hasn't mastered: he shreds like the very best, only cleaner; he can skip to either extreme of jazz-rock fusion in an instant and loads more styles; his phrasing is intelligent and hooky. He is complemented by a highly competent bass and drum duo, whose easy, nimble groove lets him show his full potential. All this makes for a very pleasurable and engrossing listen, especially recommended if you are a musician yourself.
