4.5 superb | Essence | October 16th 15 | Austin Lunn sounds refreshed on this release.
He may not have the anger or feeling of
political
dejection that drove the fury and brilliance
of Collapse, but he finally seems to have
found his
voice from other influences. This is as
collected as he's ever been, and it's a
remarkable thing to
behold. Expanding and experimenting has paid
off - Sleep to the Sound of the Waves Crashing
is
something he never would have done before, and
sounds like the song all of New Bermuda wished
it
was.
Oh, and Autumn Eternal (the track) absolutely
fucking slays

4.0 excellent | MistaCrave | October 16th 15 | Austin Lunn moves away from the tentative pussyfooting that we heard on "Roads to the North" and
releases an album that is much more straight forward, melodic, and atmospheric. I use the term
"straight forward" loosely, as this album is almost experimental in it's own sense, at least for
Panopticon standards. The riffs on here are the most emotional and innovative that Lunn has ever
recorded. His vocal performance has improved significantly, along with his songwriting. Lunn is
also known for his trademark drumming. This album without a doubt harbors his most impressive
percussive performance. Ambient interludes masterfully envelop the listener in a serene autumn
atmosphere, one that will do an exceptionally impressive job at making him/her feel like she's
sitting atop a desolate mountain in the Appalachian wilderness, observing the spectacular foliage
with an indescribable bliss. This is easily Lunn's best work, even topping his debut. Pick it up
immediately.

4.4 superb | Benjamin Kuettel EMERITUS | October 16th 15 | From what I've heard of Panopticon before Autumn Eternal, the one-man project has a great run of atmospheric black metal albums exploring a wide range of themes. This is considered his most impressive release yet however, magnificently harnessing the essence of autumn throughout the ghostly atmospheres, particularly within the soothing opener and "Oaks Ablaze". Much of Autumn Eternal balances incredible guitar solos and blasting drums with clean guitar breaks and naturalistic interludes stunningly. A strong discography now has its crowning achievement with the most mature sense of songwriting yet, and has solidified itself as one of the greatest metal albums of the year. Excellent Fall album. For fans of Drukdh, Agalloch, and Opeth.

4.0 excellent | SinNanna | March 18th 19 | On Autumn Eternal, Austin starts incorporating the folk elements that we came to know most prominently on Kentucky and Roads To The North in a much more suddle way, delivering a record that on the surface seems to go for a heavier, more straightforward black metal sound. This is however not a jab at the actual compositions, as this record at times goes from roaringly aggressive but still melodious to stunningly melancholic and almost cinematic without falling in the usual stereotypical sound pallets that a lot of his american collegues (still) seemed to fall into so easily. The music on this record not only retains its earth-like quality but stays multi-faceted and dynamic throughout, giving it a lot of replay value. Apart from the stunning 4-minute opener, this record is pretty excempt from folky interludes and breaks, but the very winding song structures and progressions that these songs go through are always engaging and interestingly rich, and other things like for example the beautiful synthesizers and bells towards the end of Into The North Woods as well as the sporadic but effective field recordings and post rock influences help to enhance Panopticon's usual emotionally laden roots-y aesthetic even further. As made clear with the title, Autumn Eternal is Austin's ode to autumn's early october atmosphere, and its definitely up there with some of Drudkh's best work in terms of conveying that. Autumn Eternal stands as one of the best not only under the Panopticon name but of metal albums in the 2010's for me as well.

4.5 superb | TheNemeton91 | April 12th 18 | A positively fucking inspired, tighter-than-ever release from a revitalized and driven
Austin Lunn. Black Metal's most wholesome artist brings us his most superbly produced,
tightly crafted, infectious work to date. Fan of Americana? The absolutely gorgeous
"Tamarack's Gold Returns" has You covered. Want it blended with Metal? The goosebump-
inducing closer "The Wind's Farewell" will move You. Fan of Enslaved? Check out "Sleep
To The Sound Of The Waves Crashing". Want some gorgeous Doom? "A Superior Lament" is a
must. In need of some triumphant inspiration? "Into The North Woods" will kick Your ass.
Despite this remarkable palette, Autumn Eternal is arguably, track-to-track, the most
cohesive work of Lunn's excellent discography. With a powerful (final four tracks)
finishing stretch, a song or two for nearly any kind of Black Metal fan, and a
reinvigorated sense of urgency, "Autumn Eternal" may just be Lunn's finest. - 4.7/5

4.5 superb | cjbizzlebizzle | December 31st 15 | Autumn Eternal by Panopticon (Austin Lunn) is the best metal album of 2015. Lunn has truly mastered his sound here, which should sound a bit familiar, producing one of the most focused and natural atmospheric black metal albums to date. Tamarack's Gold Returns introduces the listener to a solemn, almost melancholy outdoor environment where they will be left to experience an hour-long barrage of black metal that dips deeply into folk and melodic territory. The album's title does not need to be repeated but Lunn does paint a wonderful picture of the fall with his carefully crafted passages. Behind the crunchy distorted guitars often lays strings which truly weave this masterpiece together. Lunn's composition skills are on full display as long driving riffs, ambient wandering vocals, an underbelly of strings, masterfully placed clean vocal passages, variation between temp, intense drums and powerful transitions allow the full hour to stay interesting. While the tracks certainly are similar and Lunn sticks to a powerful formula each song takes on its own identity and it always feels like there is a purpose and destination in the writing. Production is truly intriguing working mostly as a strength in its natural and less-than-polished style; don't expect click tracks and vocal tuning here. Atmospheric black metal is not new. One-man black metal projects are not new. Panopticon has found a truly beautiful place with Autumn Eternal pushing a great genre even further with a dark yet hopeful journey through the outdoors.
