Fast-paced and always moving black metal with elements reminiscent of viking metal and a melodic underbelly. Two parts black for every one part melodic allowing some color and emotions in a mostly bleak atmosphere. The 43-minute runtime is just about perfect as this album never allows relief and could easily become too repetitive if allowed to go on longer. In my eyes it feels a bit like Pale Folklore and Primordial run through the gauntlet of traditional Norwegian black metal; it feels like a throwback that has been polished up. Effective efforts all around with good production, intense drums with quick-strike ride beats, slightly lo-fi crushing rhythm guitar riffs and energetic, angry vocals that sound desperate at times. I, II, V and VI bring me back to the album but none of the tracks are to be skipped.

Every song is composed masterfully of several different incredible riffs that introduce themselves at the perfect moment. Well made and well thought out. Lyrics and vocals are amongst the best in the genre, and the atmosphere is prevalent. Darkside is a genius on drums, his cymbal work is unparalleled and is best displayed in track II. Track V, however, may be my favorite song ever. I've never heard a better black metal record in my life.

Very high quality black metal, especially the second half. It is nothing more than that though, and it feels like it lacks some personality that would make it recognizable and memorable.

There's a certain blend of atmospheres surrounding "Exercise In Futility" that make it so unique and fantastic. It can be raw and thunderous, filled with vigor and grandiose, or it can be dark and lugubrious. The different moods are transitioned into each other so incredibly well that they blend into a beautiful melting pot of sound. What else is incredible about this album is the level of proficiency and accessibility there is- there is an extensive variety of riffs and drum patterns, and all of them are completely cohesive (topped with some perfect mid-range coarse shouts of course). "Exercise in Futility" is very straightforward, but it perfects what it does.

Despite their namesakes, this sextuplet of title-tracked workouts is far from fruitless. Black metal that wallops with galvanic grime and ruthless riffage, meshing moods of earth-shake austerity and melodic semi-hopefulness. Prominent qualities include greatly gruff frog-in-a-swamp vox, momentum-sag refusal, judicious timeframe i.e. wrapping things up in under 45 minutes, and cymbal-work, cymbal-work, cymbal-work.
