return of the psychedelic riverside.. and another masterpiece.. they found their atmosphere again.. layers of effects, super-melancholic vocals, top quality musicianship, they've got whatever you might be lookin for..

Rapid Eye Movement is the final installment of Polish progressive rock band Riverside's exquisite Reality Dream Trilogy. Beyond the Eyelids, 02 Panic Room and Parasomnia are all terrific progressive rock extended tracks incorporating atmospheric guitar tones from the late Piotr Grudzinski. However the true standout track is the epic closer, appropriately titled, Ultimate Trip. This thirteen minute plus behemoth sonic journey is perhaps the band's magnum opus studio track.

REM is probably the most varied of the earlier Riverside albums. It's got wonderful flow and structure, but I'd say the individual tracks on their own aren't as great as those on SLS.

Riverside’s debut outing, Out of Myself, was a pretty refreshing prog-rock record, even if they didn’t really tread on any new ground in the process. The band’s overall approach, while a little Porcupine Tree in delivery, was well recorded, produced, and the musicians had the necessary skill to pull the music off as an enjoyable listen, rather than a droning bore. As the band continued to nurture their sound they seemed to lose the enthusiastic feel that came off their first album, unable to transition this to their sophomore effort. While Second Life Syndrome was not a bad album, it seemed to possess more of a bleak undertone, with the overall delivery coming off a bit less inspired than their previous attempt. On 2007’s Rapid Eye Movement, Riverside seems to be finding a bit of that enthusiasm again, producing a lusher, more melodic recording. Still, as a whole, the experience still lacks that certain punch that the band managed to deliver with their debut album. There is always hints of continuing progress though, so it’s hard to fault this band for much or to truly be disappointed with this, even if it is more of a casual listen.

The guitar tones and the general mixing in this album make the music feel washed out and muddy, so a lot of the intensity is lost. The keyboard effects really crowd the spaces between instruments and washes away the friction and tension the songs otherwise would have had.
