Edgiest album of all time. Ironically, also very generic.
But seriously, some of the worst lyrics of all time and painfully run of the mill pseudo-trip
hoppy bullshit soaring synthpads production backing one of the most boring vocalists I've ever heard.

Such a good album. Love the trap/hip hop influence but dearly enjoy how lush and organic the production is.
Favorites: Gasoline, Hurricane, Control, and Hold Me Down.

Personality, substance, and the concept of a quirk. These three things and then some are what American singer-songwriter Ashley Frangipane (aka Halsey) lacks throughout her debut album. Admittedly Badlands does offer moments which are passable, though said instances are few and far between. What we have here in general is a simply unfocused, overproduced, hollow-sounding record from a lady whose promise is at best minimal. Quick side note: the lyrics to "New Americana" - structurally a bland track - reek of embarrassment. It might be satire, but the problem is that it's not good satire.

From the stale instrumentals to the singing this is boring and uninteresting. There's barely any variation in her vocals and all the songs follow the same mid tempo beat. Its appeal is the angsty, "edgy," and pseudo-deep lyrics and sound. It just feels like it panders a bit to her fans who eat up every little thing she does as totally "original" content. She has potential, but this doesn't show it.

At times, Halsey's lyrics are a bit cliche and juvenile, but I think in a lot of ways, that's exactly why this album works relatively well. I see the narrative of this whole album as a girl new to adulthood who is just beginning to discover her niche in the world. For instance, if she wrote a song like "New Americana" at 30 rather than 20, it wouldn't work at all, but on an album like this, it fits right in with this "new adult" sort of perspective - my generation is so awesome, we're so open-minded, we'll show you adults how to do it right. It's this naivete that is simultaneously the album's weakest AND strongest quality.

Monotonous indie pop with god awful "edgy" lyrics and sub par vocal performance. The boring
instrumentals (except Roman Holiday which probably the only track worth your time) combined with
Halsey's dull performance makes this one of the worst indie pop releases of this year.

This is horrible... the music is passable I guess, but the lyrics (New Americana and Gasoline come
to mind in particular) and vocals are infuriatingly bad. Reeks of trytoohard, if I may make up a
lazy term here.

Like a subpar Lana Del Rey with Imagine Dragons instrumentals; the sound of the mid-2010s reduced to its lowest common denominator; radio fodder you've forgotten as soon as its first chorus is finished. Also, one of the biggest tracks basically took the hook from "Juicy", removed everything sexy and cool about it, and put on a tepid vocal performance.
