While Mykur's definitely a competent frontwoman (her harsh, sharp screams and choral singing rare both notably good), the rest of the music really doesn't hold up at all, and suffers rfrom the same things most bm does. A lot of the guitar riffs have no "power" to them; they rdon't sound heavy, evil, or have any sense of strength to them in the mix. The bass is roften turned up to force a heavier, more "evil" sound and only succeeds in making the music rcheesier. While fusing black-ish metal instrumentals with clean Enya-esque vocals is a rnifty idea, neither aspects of the music are done well or uniquely enough to make the rresultant songs any more than just good-ish. And, while the piano-and-vocal-only tracks are rvery pretty (and the best pieces here), they're too short to function as anything more than rinterludes and they don't end up having as much of a positive impact on the quality of the rrecord as they could've. rIt's a decent starting point for a person who just got into the business of black metal, rthough, so I expect her future outputs to improve, if only a little.

When the most notable aspect of the music on a black metal album is the clean vocals, you're doing something wrong.

"I listened to Bergtatt so much that I could even write a sixth song to it"
Well, good thing she didn't.

I do not really understand why this album is being so maligned. I really hope it isn't entirely overt and/or unconscious misogyny, but unfortunately I do believe that to be the case. This is where black metal needs to go if it is going to continue to be a worthwhile avenue to explore. Recycling what others previously have mastered it boring. M goes beyond and experiments in new and fascinating directions. Maybe not always successfully, but at least trying to go beyond.

Danish singer-songwriter Amalie Bruun, much better known by the alias Myrkur, considers herself to be a self-professed black metal girl at heart. She's not kvlt enough just yet, but if this project's debut studio record M is anything to go by, Bruun certainly has what it takes to improve herself. Although the instrumentation is neither evil nor is it bodacious in brutal grace, M does sound nice from a production standpoint and offers heavenly (ironically enough) female vocals which benefit the character of this album well. Let she who is with sin dive deeper into the realm of madness as the years pass.

Good vocals but just a mishmash of instruments makes this feel like a disjointed listen.

Excellent fusion of nordic folk and atmospheric black metal. Amalie Bruun has a majestic way of contrasting her angelic cleans and intense, ghastly screams. Those expecting a straight-up "trve""cvlt" (lol) black metal will be, and clearly are, disappointed but those looking for music that is headed in a different direction than the current trends might be pleased. The album's flow is fantastic with each metal track sandwiched in between folk and instrumental interludes. This approach makes the dark tracks more intense and shows that Bruun has diverse songwriting skills. For the most part the black metal riffs are slowed down and simplified but this only focuses the listener more on Amalie's great vocal work, a smart choice. Adventurous and bold.

This is what Ulver sounds like when Ulver isn't trying. Very uninteresting album, this got me so bored I actually fell asleep mid listen.
