Breakers is by far Newsom's most diverse offering. Every track sees her stretching herself as
a musician and taking her voice to new interesting place.
As per usual with Newsom's music, the lyrics are the selling point for me. Each song paints a
picture so vivid, and so thought provoking that you can't help but feel you stumbled on the
worlds greatest poet. Occasionally Newsom mumbles her lines and gives a bit of a stilted
delivery, but for the most part her vocals and overall tone is fantastic.
Instrumentally this album is wild. The harp and piano are the main instruments, but she isn't
afraid to bring in a whole host of other instruments to help tell her story. This is a woman
who knows how to make things sound epic. The overall sound is so grandiose that at points it
can be over the top.
Still with the few minor quibbles this album ranks as one of the best albums of 2015, and may
grow to be one of my favorite records of all time.

This was my entry point into Newsom's work and I was really impressed. I really like her imaged lyrics and they pair really well with really original production.

Less grand than her last two, but she's more succinct than on HOoM (Ys is a different kind of monster). She successfully manages to keep her songs under the 8-minutes bar while still baffling us with magnificient melodies. I also feel her music is somehow "simpler", ie less mindfucking. The songs let themselves be discovered more easily than on previous albums, which might sound not like a good thing, but here the medieval melodies immediately find their way into my head.

My deepest condolences to those who will never prevail past the birdy hurdle of her vocals; a lovely instrument in itself once you're accustomed to 'em. But between the unfathomably beautiful "Anecdotes" and Newsom-version-of-frolicsome-single "Sapokanikan" making for a bulletproof one-two punch induction and the per-usual lifetime's worth of history-referencing+soul-searching poetic wonder from start to finish, underlying concerns merely consist of seeing if they can up the ante and said poetic wonder becoming obscured in baroque intricacy. Fortunately for the worrywarts, it's absolutely sweeping -- from whimsical labyrinths to sapid sparsities, a chock-full of depth is delivered and goosebumps sprout on the regz. And given the eminence of the busier arrangements, I'd say some word concealment is a fair swap -- but those looking to fully experience "the nullifying, defeating, negating, repeating joy of life", do yourself a solid: sit down with a damn lyric sheet.
