Fervid aliveness-devotee frontman James Alex reveals his 41 years from his immovable worn+torn delivery, but on paper he reads like the overzealous naivete of a young-buck punk who sees pure volume, inebriated bliss, and music in general as perpetual life-forces worth dedicating his entire being to, for better or worse. Which makes the concision of this concentrated package-o-passion all the more rational: you get the feeling their all around frankness partially stems from eagerly savoring the same wild nightlife hazes and noisy shimmer-heavens they sing about and play aloud; too caught up in being young-n-alive to muster much more than direct+assertive sub-3-minute tunes. But an acoustic/piano/cello ballad as centerpiece and lines like: "I try to write, try to use my brain / But every time I try my heart gets in the way" are strong tip-offs towards being consumed in sheer emotion enough to where they just can't be bothered to embellish. Good-to-Know Line #2: "Most of the words get stuck in my mouth / But I mean all the ones that punch their way out". Nuff said.

I remember reading Adam Downer's review of "Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street" and being so mad at how wrong he was. After listening to Beach Slang's weak, thin, repetitive first full length, I don't necessarily agree with his larger points about punk music, but I see where he was coming from. You can only be told how "alive" "kids like us" feel so many times before it starts to ring a little hollow.

Pretty ordinary-ish pop punk album. There are certainly bands who have a similar sound but do it in a much more interesting way. I'm worried I might be too much of a cynic, but I think I'm too cynical to truly enjoy this album. The lyrics feel far too cliche and rehashed for me to form any sort of emotional attachment to the music.

I feel as if Beach Slang, while surely talented folks, have made a record that is by certain people for certain people. Those certain people being, of course, teenagers in California who love to party and don't like rules. And it's not even as if the lyrics are that esoteric at all, it's just that pretty much every song here says the same thing, and a couple of them almost sound the same too. It's not bad in any way, but the entire record can be summed up by hearing one song, "Young & Alive". And it's a shame they spread themselves that thin, because the instrumentation and vocals here are quite great more often than not. The notion that such qualities can be befuddled by an irritatingly repetitive and cliched lyrical performance makes this record a bit of wasted potential. Time will only tell if this gets fixed or not, though I certainly hope it does.
