Going to keep this at a 4. Yes, after hearing all of the singles, I really thought they lost their charm too. I was scared to listen to this because the only really good song was "Cough It Out". Since then, they have all grown on me immensely (especially "Cough It Out") and I must say that the other half of the album as a whole is miles better than any of the singles. There are definitely some cringe-worthy lyrics showing up here and there but they have some great ones as well. Songs like "Motorcycle" and "2YL" sound like the songs that this band should be making to follow-up their last release and "The Plan (Fuck Jobs)" sounds like something from their early releases mixed with the added instrumentation of this album. Those are about the closest to the band's previous material that we'll get here. The rest is a somewhat poppier yet vibrant "rock and roll" band having as much fun as they know how to. Album highlight "Plastic Flowers" is a testament to that and it may just be the best song in their discography. rLong story short, if you doubted this album because of the singles, you're in for a treat.

The band truly excels in this album by spicing up their arrangements by adding newer instruments and more distortion guitar whilst still retaining the raw emotion placed in their past albums. The songs are catchier and this album is a true step for the band to get bigger in the indie rock circuit. Older fans who like the acoustic guitar thing might stray away from this one due to the more polished production but open minded fans who are willing to accept change will come to enjoy this.

I'm struggling with this one. Consider all of the singles: all good, none great - and within the context of the album it's cohesive; for the most part, it sounds nice. For the most part, it sounds like The Front Bottoms. The Plan (Fuck Jobs) is one of their better songs overall. But I shouldn't be going to such lengths to like an album from a band that I love so dear. What is the purpose of the trumpet on Summer Shandy? I feel like the question's review enough. I'll just listen to Wolfman. It does grow a little, though.

The problem isn't with the change in instrumentation. The problem is the fact that they are devoid of any of the interesting song structures or unique lyrics that were present on their debut and sophomore album. It's not bad, it's just boring.
