With the Carter 2, Wayne made it clear that he was a force to be taken seriously in the rap game. The album shows a new focus on lyricism and punchlines, and while this doesn't match the stream of conscious madness of his mixtapes, it's a great start for a young rapper actually trying to better himself. The 19 full tracks are a bit overblown and self-indulgent, but what's impressive is that Wayne handles these songs almost all on his own. There is 1 verse from Curren$y and one, always awful verse from Baby. There are 3 tracks with the same beat, marking the beginning, middle and end of the album, but they work well, and Wayne spits on these with no hooks. The production is pretty good, almost exclusively designed for car stereos, and their are a surprising abundance of real instruments, such as electric guitar, bass guitar and organ to help bring the Southern aspect of the music to life. There are certainly a few tracks that aren't needed, and the subject matter is fairly basic, but Wayne stepped his game up considerably from his previous works, and that, in itself is an admirable feat for a rapper, considering most of the popular one's at the time were stagnant, coasting on their name recognition.

This album is widely known as one of Wayne's best albums. Tha Carter 2 is very balanced. There is an even amount of hookless, freestylish tracks, club bangers, and well rounded songs. Weezy's album transcends his inflated ego. It also had a lot of good sturdy funk-blues tracks. But, Wayne's lyrics need a little polishing. This album shows wayne at his most focused, and is a strong step for his relatively young career. The beats are good but not as good as Tha Carter. The lyrics aren't very creative too. Talks about sex and hoes in Fireman, Money in (surprisingly) Money on My Mind, cars in Best Rapper Alive. On a shorter note, Overall, this is Wayne's best album and Hustler Musik is his best song.

From "Tha Mobb" you can tell shit's gonna be a hip-hop classic. Even though Lil Wayne is whoring himself out to do collabs with other artists and is pretending to play the guitar these days, you can't deny this album was a masterpiece.

Yes, Lil Wayne is a mainstream rapper. But he's the best of them all, and he has managed to gain most of his credibility through mixtapes, such as the excellent Da Drought 3 and Dedication 2. Tha Carter II is an actual release, and, while it doesn't stack up to his mixtape work, is still a very fine release indeed. Songs range from club-bangers ("Fireman"), glamourized tunes of money and drugs ("Money on my Mind"), and the occasional soft R&B track ("Shooter"). Tha Carter II is an excellent, sprawling release that is varied enough to never become boring, and is an absolute must-buy for any hip-hop fan.
