It's a general consensus within a number of (wrong) people that the use of auto-tune is somehow entirely and solely indicative of ones lack of talent and ability with vocals. What these people fail to realize is that if used properly, auto-tune provides quite the enjoyable aesthetic. That's why Dirty Sprite 2 is a good record: it's bursting at the seams with an addicting and insatiably fun vibe, helped along well by the use of auto-tune. If you're listening to this for lyrical ability, you're doing it wrong (That's not to say that a huge chunk of this record isn't immediately quotable, though). The real draw is the production, though, with its trap-influenced beats giving a very druggy feel to the whole thing. There's no shortage of bangers here, but there's also a nice bevy of relaxed, leaned out tracks too. DS2 is definitely worth your time if you're a fan of fun and entertaining trap-influenced hip-hop.

Future once again sadflexin' about his rich life. Thanks to Metro Boomin, the production is top fucking notch, but this is just a tad too subdued to my taste - I prefer Future's raging delivery, like on Monster. Good shit though, just not his best.

This is Future's most consistent LP so far. It's never quite amazing and I didn't find any real jam, but a lot of tracks are quite good and car playlist worthy. There is a common aesthetic and many of the instrumentals are nice or interesting. I do not understand 4 which not only is awful in itself but also is the only track that completely cashes with an otherwise quite coherent album - although without much at all in the way of progression, conclusion or construction. 1's okay with a cool instrumental but meh delivery, 2 goes kinda hard, Drake's feat on 3 works well and the track has a subtle, interesting instrumental. 5's less dumb than 4 but still the second weakest track here (mostly fine), 6 is kinda basic but cool with hard hitting drums, 7 is quite fun with the orchestral-ish strings, 8 has a nice nocturnal synthy vibe, 9 is tame but fine, 10-13's all quite cool, with the breezy 13 working nicely to end the album. Bonus tracks: 14 cool, 15 a cool mix of oldschool and modern trap with some of his best flowing delivery on this LP, 16 p forgettable with its nintendo instrumental, 17 kinda cool, nocturnal sad but also quite hard, and 18 one of the hardest on this record, kinda cool. 3.35

Future has come full circle. After the dubious appearance on "Pussy's Overrated" with Wiz Khalifa following a messy split with Ciara, and the mediocre Honest, Future has taken most of 2015 by storm by doing what he does best. Following what will undoubtedly be called a legendary mixtape run of "Monster," "Beast Mode" and "56 Nights," Dirty Sprite 2, as its breakout-referencing name suggests, is an homage to everything that made Future a thing in the first place: southern-fried trap ever bubbling below the surface of slick vocal and lyrical delivery, often boiling over and causing a glorious ruckus. This is a Future with his head clear and in his element, and boy does it sound good.

His stylistic+thematic limitations are conclusively divulged, but undeniably an emboldened+expanded variant of Future's recent mixtape output. The trap-house essence is more explicit and enveloping than ever: even when cash is being blown, this lucrative kingpin sounds far from triumphal; the overriding grim grime of percocet haze, blood money, and multifarious salacities bleak+plainly-stated rather than glorified+hyped-up. But golly, does it get redundant -- so much so that blatant one-liner quotables about pissing out codeine and thumbing slut-butts may occupy more space in the memory bank than song-by-song disparities.

Future rarely, if ever, disappoints (the aimless rage of Monster was as close to a fumble as he's had so far), and this record is no exception. Future engages with the listener emotionally like no one else. And after a period of experimentation with the limits of autotune and vocal gurgles, has seemed to hit his stride in terms of writing. But for all of that, Dirty Sprite 2 bogs down towards the end as predictable, treading a lot of the same ground the great 56 Nights covered. It's a great record, make no mistake, but it doesn't match the heights of Pluto and Honest, which makes it something of a disappointment.
