3.5 great | davidwave4 | August 21st 15 | As a mature and self-aware pop album, Beauty Behind the Madness soars. It's better than anything Abel's put out since 2012, and takes his sonic image to a different, but not bad, place.

4.5 superb | EMIN1993EM | August 22nd 15 | This album isn't nearly as good as the masterpiece that "trilogy". however, it's considerably better than the lacklustre "kiss land" and a step forward in the right direction if abel really wants to go for a more pop-influenced sound from now on. we don't have the annoying reliance on talking about his completely destructive lifestyle anymore. instead, he actually gives a story arc this time around, showing that he's at least trying to find a light at the end of the tunnel. that doesn't let the more lyrical explicit tracks sound stale like on "kiss land". this project will surely disappoint a lot of die-hard fans for its complete rendition to pop and even if they don't mind that change of direction, this is still a flawed album (none of the featured tracks feel like a the weeknd's song, especially losers and dark times). With that being said, this offers much more quality than most of the pop trash that is constantly being released nowadays. abel's ear for production is still impressive and he does a great job in the vocal department for the most part. the story arc that he presented on this album also brings variety to the whole thing without sacrifying cohesiveness. in the night can get another more-than-worthy shot at the billboard's top 10 too. the hills and cant feel my face might even take that #1 spot.

0.0 | this is the best album that i\\\\\\\'ve (n)ever heard in my entire life. | September 27th 15 | yeah aight so obvs he sold out hard, not everyone can be the next r&b queen-douche justin timberlake and he should have just stayed content with being an underground mixtape kinda nappy-head club bro instead of tryna shine like some kinda industry-hoe but lets face it buds, this guy right here has NEVER NOT been a dental floss soft cocked bitty-fumbler, NEVER NOT EVEN ONCE. this skippidy-freakin'-doo-da broheim has been soft as cashmere since before u was even born, sell out or not he is, was, and always will be a lunchables jello-cup mc so who really gives a flinger? yall need to just relax, face the facts that this is no better and no worse than any of his other shit and turn up the jams just loud enough that you can enjoy it but make sure that no one else can hear u listenin' cuz that would be immensely embrassin'.

2.5 average | Tjatkinson1998 | January 11th 22 | You can tell here Abel was finding his foot in the pop world as some cuts come off half baked, in particular the Ed Sheeran and Lana collabs. This album does have it?s highlights, especially the brilliant The Hills, Can?t Feel My Face and Tell Your Friends. There was a toning down of the explicit content in places, which is fine, but the songwriting in places feels less unique. Overall a decent first attempt at a pop record. 6/10

3.5 great | dihstyle69 | December 6th 15 | yeah you might call this a sell out move but as far as sell out moves go, this one worked quite well! it doesn't have the atmosphere that his first three mixtapes had but as a pop album, it doesn't many things right! 3.5+

3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | October 16th 15 | It's a far cry from work such as House Of Balloons and Echoes Of Silence, but the newest album from The Weeknd is a solid, catchy pop album that doesn't try to be anything else. While it is unfortunate that the last five tracks leave the album on a lackluster note, the first nine are all varying degrees of good, "Often", "The Hills", and "Shameless" in particular being great tracks. Tesfaye's voice is still very good, and his lyrics have become more self-aware in addition to his usual antics. The production is what tends to shift the album from good to middling, and it's no surprise that the production is much more lively on the first half. Still, sometimes it can get slightly overproduced, like in the case of "Earned It", which is saved by an excellent vocal performance. At the end of the day, The Weeknd crafts a solid and occasionally fantastic pop record, sell-out criticisms be damned.

2.5 average | ReAnimator | September 13th 15 | It's catchy but as far removed from The Weeknd's previous work as Kiss Land from House of Balloons, maybe signifying some sort of progression in sound - but this is all smoke. The Weeknd has never been this corny or forgettable - even the mediocre tracks on Kiss Land have greater replay value than something as asinine as "Dark Times." After "The Hills," what little personality peeks out between the shiny studio beats drains fast, and it's all downhill to the unadulterated cheese of "Prisoner" and "Angel."
