You want the most overrated piece of music in the history of, well, music? Here you go. Take
uninteresting melodies, extend them to ridiculous lengths with no real sense of direction,
and augment them with elaborate, unnecessary, though characteristically baroque
ornamentation, and you have Vivaldi's so-called masterpiece. The exception is Winter, which
is great. It does not, however, make up for the other three seasons' banality.

A genuinely monumental, magnificent work that surely can not have sounded better in its time than it does now. Spring's "Allegro", Summer's stormy "Presto", Winter's "Allegro Non Molto", and both of Autumn's "Allegro" movements are the highlights, the first being among the most famous pieces of music ever composed. Music literalism abounds - see the high staccato strings in Winter, and the way they suggest a blizzard or hailstorm - which might arguably make this an early example of programme music; yet importance will always take a backseat to finesse, something The Four Seasons has in spades. If there is a finer piece of baroque music than the compositions here, than I've yet to hear it.

If you are completely tired of this overplayed baroque piece try the Fabio Biondi & Europa Galante rendition, it will bring new life to it.

Truly amazing, beautiful and moving in every sense of the word. Each season conveying subtle emotions, each unique and mystical in their own sense. It truly sickens me that in this day and age "Classical" music is such an overlooked genre. 4.5/5

Spring i. 3.5 bombastic with a great climax, tho somewhat annoying ii. 2 quite boring iii. 3.5 great romantic sweeps but dips a bit too much; Summer i. 4 wish there were no slow sections ii. 2 more boring iii. 4.5 stfu its impossible to overplay this masterpiece; Autumn i. 3.5 just as iconic and mid as spring i ii. 1.5 quite boring iii. 3.5 lofty fun; Winter i. 4.5 harder than anything until the 80s ii. 3 the only good adagio of the four concertos iii. 4 snowy with a fitting blizzard of a climax

Equal parts melodic, emotional, and virtuosic - this collection of concertos may not have been Vivaldi's most famous work in his life, but it certainly was what put him back on the map for listeners of the 20th century. Accompanied with texts that described individual scenes in the individual seasons, it's a (perhaps-disconnected, nevertheless-interesting) cool early example of program, narrative-driven music. This narrative inspires Vivaldi to pull out some of his most dynamic and harmonically-diverse pieces ever, which is what helps make it stand out from the other string pieces in his catalog. The opening movement of "Spring" is among the most universally-recognized classical melodies at this point, but it is best heard in-context, when it contrasts with the stormier parts of this collection. All in all, perhaps as close to a Bach-like compositional approach as the Italian redhead would ever reach.

Of course it?s onw of the greatest classical pieces of all time, it has stood the test of time and is as iconic as one would think. But I?m not much of a Baroque guy. I feel like my favorite classical pieces mostly came in the Romantic era. That?s not to say that this piece isn?t amazing. It executes perefectly its concept, never gets long, it?s fresh everytime I revisit it, but unfortunately I don?t revisit much often.

Very solid piece, and an absolute classic. The last 2 suite's in particular are amazing, with spring's first movement especially showing some incredible virtuosic abilities from Vivaldi. Spring I was not a big fan of, quite straight-forward, simple and slow.

Four moving concertos for violin and orchestra from a still natural baroque, in touch with the perception of the composer and incredible in composition and feeling. From the cheerful and sober excitement of both equinoxes to the dark and moody solstices, there is not a single banal piece to be found here. Anyway I'm just to tired of Spring, truth to be told, but due solely to overexposure.

Nigel Kennedy has an amazing rendition of this. It never comes close to being dull. His version of Winter sounds ridiculously metal in several places.

What do you need to say? It's Vivaldi and its his finest work. there's no possible way you haven't heard at least an excerpt in the 1000s of places its appeared in pop culture. And I guarantee it's worth a full listen no matter what you like.

One night I was listening to Yngwie Malmsteen when I read the CD jacket and discovered one of his musical influences was Antonio Vivaldi. I decided to give classical a try and was entirely blown away. I can see why Yngwie was moved to music by the likes of Vivaldi. Simply incredible....
