This is probably gonna seem harsh, but I can see why this didn't really catch on. It's not bad technically. The compositions work. The performances are executed well. But I'm just not enjoying the vast majority of it. Most of it's not really evoking any feelings for me. I skimmed through some of the tracks looking for the part that'll draw me in, which isn't a good sign. Still, has some great ideas that indicated they were "ahead of the curb," whatever purpose that entails after the fact.

Another weird weird album from Anacrusis, and while musically quite different from the last, still amazing. The most immediate thing about this album is the huge improvement in production including an actual lower end! However, the technicality, especially in the drumming department takes a slight hit. Still, the music is very technical and proggy, and the mad vocals are in place.

Clearly their best album for me, yet still not one I feel like I want to go back to. 1 starts off great, vocals aren't the best but the track is nice. I like it, they almost sound like a different band here. I'm not a fan of 2 but you can tell this is going to be a much better album. 3 goes really wankery though, with the strings, squeals etc., particularly in the end. At that point my hopes of this being an album I'll be back to went down, and never went back up really. 5 is an interesting track, 8 is kinda cool and 9 offers nice drumming. For the rest, this is mosty ok thrash, with the occasional good idea (prominent bass on 3), and the occasional squeal or annoying solo. Erf. 3.4

Although Manic Impressions is the more popular album, Screams and Whispers holds my spot for best Anacrusis album and possibly the best progressive thrash album ever. Anacrusis didn't tone down the metal, but I feel like they added more progressive elements especially a much larger focus on keyboards and atmospheric sounds. Besides the musical progressiveness, I think the band also succeeded in improving their overall songwriting by paying close attention to each song and giving each one a good flow and transition between the verse riffs and choruses.

Some supremely overlooked, great prog-melodeath album. The only detractor I can think of would have to be it's length. While most albums of the genre are best enjoyed in 30-40 min intervals, this one drags on for just over an hour.
It's perfect for the die-hard metal fan, but for the average "all-types" listener this might come off a little tiring. 4.0/5
After another listen, I stand by this opinion. It is only Manic Impressions that is uninspired generic thrash.
