Solos slay. Drums slay. Vocals slay. Rhythm sections slay. The slaying slays. It's like rNocturnal and Ritual mixed together. rRyan's solos have become more fitting with the music, Alan has proven himself to be just as rmuch of a monster on the kit as Shannon, and Max has some juicy bass fills on here. Trevor rand Brian keep things ever so consistent on their ends. rWhile The Black Dahlia Murder may not be reinventing the wheel, they're sure keeping it rspinning at a lovely pace. Album as a whole is fucking insane, that's for sure.

It's what you'd expect from The Black Dahlia Murder, which at this point should be fierce melodic death metal far above the average. It won't go down in the books as one of the greats, but Abysmal's sheer intensity and ease in its execution gives the album, and TBDM as a whole, the unique ability to make melodeath sound fresh again.

A long overdue return to form for The Black Dahlia Murder. Ryan Knight's ethereal melodic lines nicely balance out the whirlwind of aggression that pads out the rhythm section. And of course Strnad's vocals are very much the benchmark for all to reach.

Low 8 out of 10: While not as strong as works such as "Nocturnal" or "Everblack", The Black Dahlia Murder still proves they can pull off making something accessible while still being structured and written very nicely. Trevor's vocals are as killer as ever as well. Pretty intense LP!

Once again the boys deliver with another solid ass album. Orgasmic Melodic riffage, tons of tremolo picked melodies, the ever present technical drum work, blistering solos, oddly catchy songwriting, and of course, Trevor's classic shrieks. Tbdm have been known for their Heartwork-era carcass esque melodeath, but a few tracks on here, most notably "The Advent" actually have an amorphis/dark tranq style melodeath vibe so that's pretty cool. I Look forward to catching tbdm in December with Artificial Brain, Goatwhore, Iron Reagan, and Entheos. 3.4/5

I've never heard their other albums, but this is some decent melodic death metal. It's more aggressive then most bands that fall into that genre.

I was never a huge fan of the band's At The Gates-y less melodic take on melodeath so I've never loved any of their stuff like I have some of their contemporaries' and Abysmal is definitely no exception to this. It's pretty OK melodeath but it's just not an amazing representation of what I like about the genre. Still, if you liked the band before this album should definitely not be a disappointment.

At this point, you know what you're going to get when you listen to a TBDM record: fast-paced, energetic, and sometimes over-the-top melodeath that does nothing for originality but a lot of things for fun. Abysmal is absolutely no different. The album actually shines a bit after the start as the title-track, "Re-Faced", and "Threat Level No.3" form a triple-headed monster that features the best songwriting on the record. The rest of the album is decent enough to keep you there until closer "That Cannot Die Which Eternally Is Dead" mashes you with a quality similar to the aforementioned trio. In all, this record isn't going to make the band any new fans, but it will most certainly satisfy the ones they already have.

Have to admit I wasn't really expecting too much after Everblack but this proved to be a decent surprise. Sure, it's all standard Dahlia, but it's done with the utmost proficiency, I actually had my head nodding along during some parts haha!

As many have said, it's TBDM. Beats its predecessor into the ground though. Cassidy has really settled into his spot as their drummer on this one and the riffs are more diverse and overall the record is probably their heaviest since Deflorate.
