Going to take more listens to see if it has staying power, but I think this is possibly Beach House's best album ryet. Listening, I was constantly reminded by something that TV reviewer Alan Sepinwall said of the brilliant rSundance series Rectify: "This is intimate drama in which nothing seems to be happening at the same time reverything is happening. Plot isn't irrelevant here, but it very much lives in the shadow of emotion and ratmosphere. Rectify is a feeling." With its gorgeous and unhurried layers of craft, melody, and, yes, feeling, I rcan't think of more apt praise for Depression Cherry.

Yet another shockingly consistent Beach House album, equipped with just as many hooks and gorgeous melodies as ever to win you over.

The single makes me stupid excited for this album... it's gorgeous. Aaaaand the full album is a wholly beautiful, hazy trip through
atmosphere and melody. The run time passes by in a flash despite, or perhaps because of the album's seemingly directionless and
lackadaisical approach to dream pop. As always with a Beach House album, the best word to sum up Depression Cherry is
ethereal. A great album for these hot and hazy summer nights.

The systematically churned out niche being transmitted here is all too cautiously measured doses of molasses-drip pop, its crystalline tones and dream-drones and apathetic drum programming languidly suspended in time. Toss in Victoria Legrand's cherubic vocals and altogether it paints an unquestionably pretty picture -- but one I wish wasn't so complacent within its dead-set aesthetic. On the flip-side of all the floaty ascension there's all this enervated immobility. How about a wee bit of agitation, or a risk here and there? Hey, just throwing "Sparks" somewhere towards the end instead would've lent some assistance.

I've listened to it a few times now and can't help feeling dissapointed. This joins Tallest Man on Earth among the
ranks of interesting new sound with boring-as songs. I like it less with each listen.
Edit: It's really grown on me now. The first six tracks are beautiful, though it loses me towards the end.

Quite often and quite to my dismay I find myself experiencing emotion. Besides the typical confusion of what is it my decrepit mind is going through I also often become bewildered by the source of those emotions. I don't know why this album makes me feel warm and kinda sad. I don't even know if those are the emotions I actually feel. They're not entirely pleasant, but they are addictive.

Another gorgeous album by these guys. This one feels slightly less upbeat then usual, in a good way. The only negative thing I can say is that some songs, like Wildflower or Bluebird, are missing something in the end. Other songs end in glorious instrumental passages, but these just end.

Space Song is their most popular song and I clearly understand, but the album as a whole is good, but not as good as this track and not as good as some other of their albums.

Where Bloom saw BH explode and finally get out of their shell, Cherry has them retract back but finally succeed at calmer, more psychedelic songs. There are still plenty of tame and dull moments, but also lots where it actually worse. Tracks like 4-5 are the clearest examples, in contrast to the quite boring 6. 7 is also quite nice, especially with its synthy intro (synthiness is a recurring theme here). The transition into 8 is, well, disjointed at best, and the track has a pretty clumsy, first act-quality start until a melodic shift at 1:30 which displays exactly what I mean when I say that BH need more dynamics to make their sound super cool instead of dull, because in those moments like here it just works miles better. 9 is nice and psych again although it drags on a touch. Earlier on the album is less consistent and has grittier touches. While 1 starts off tame, it progresses quite nicely into psychedelia. 2 adds quite an agressive guitar in places, and that is a super nice surprise in the overall mellow BH sound. Works super well, but the softer sections in between pale in comparison. 3 has a sweet intro and some cool melody ideas, but is ultimately a zzz song. Once again, I don't ask them to be more aggressive or anything, their genre is fine - it's just that to me they often fail to make the songs actually compelling instead of merely nice. 3.65
