Low 8 out of 10: I haven't liked Cattle Decapitation's music at all in the longest time. I began thinking they were a standard death metal act with a vocalist too good for them. However, this LP came out, and with the darker mood set and more experimentation between the act, Cattle Decapitation finally made an LP I can truly appreciate. The only thing I can't really behind are the drums. Otherwise you have killer guitars, sick bass, and the vocals of Travis Ryan that have only gotten better over time. This definitely takes the cake for the most pleasant surprise of 2015 in my books.

It's not the most varied album in the world but it is an exciting and well executed piece of unrelenting deathgrind. Even if you're not a massive fan of grind or death metal, I would certainly recommend giving this a listen because there are some surprises that keep Cattle Decapitation apart from the more generic bands in the genre (eg, Pacific Grim).

People are going to hate this, that's an inevitability. Basically if you enjoyed Monolith, this won't disappoint. It gets a tad repetitive and formulaic, but overall it's a fun album that never lets up. (And if you've ever seen these guys live, you'll know that was the point)

Monolith of Inhumanity was probably the more diverse and forward thinking deathgrind albums of 2012. That might have ended up hurting this album. It's still the Cattle Decap that rips throats and asks questions later, just maybe a bit more predictable. Let's see what's next for these guys before we start jump out windows.

The Anthropocene Extinction by Cattle Decapitation delivers a bone-crushing blend of death metal and grindcore with impressive performances by every member of the group. Blistering technical death guitars, lightspeed drumming and glorious death vocal range impress but ultimately the songwriting comes off a bit sloppy and less than focused. The brutally honest message about the death of our species helps move the album along but it is not enough to organize sometimes messy transitions between ideas. Some tracks just feel like random technical death ideas strewn together leaving the listener lost during a fairly short, 46 minute record. Many of the songs are forgettable and you leave pleased overall but without much specific to draw on. Plagueborn, The Prophets of Life and Not Suitable for Life are standout tracks. Cattle Decapitation have the ingredients in place to be excellent and relay refreshing social messages for a death metal band but the lack of focus and sloppy composition ultimately keep the album from being a great one.

I've never heard these guys before now, and I was definitely surprised. Kind of reminds me of a less chaotic version of modern Napalm Death with occasional bouts of melodic death metal influences. The clean singing is weird, but it works.

Cattle Decapitation's seventh and latest full-length album is by no means a disappointment, especially if you've come to enjoy the material this band has dished out since The Harvest Floor (which is a better record than Monolith of Inhumanity, but I digress). The Anthropocene Extinction stylistically and thematically picks up from where its predecessor left off - and no, this isn't a bad thing. The brutality listeners can expect from the deathgrind outfit is still present, while their newfound sense of melody continues to be an utter game changer. Travis Ryan's versatility as a frontman is impressive, to say the least, and the drumming by Dave McGraw is tight and violent-sounding as usual. Right now these guys are on a roll, as they're competent enough to let their musical direction evolve whilst keeping the aggression they've had since Day One. Nice work, Cattle Decapitation!
