A drawn out doom metal record. Its ambition is greater than its execution, resulting in it being ultimately weaker than its predecessor, Serenades. Vincent Cavanagh does an admirable job replacing Darren White on vocals, though.

Anathema's Silent Enigma is a good album, that would have been better if some songs were shortened in lenght, some of them drag to much, and that is the main reason why this album feels kind of boring at times. On the other hand the atmosphere is bleak as one can always expect from Anathema's early work, which something good, and there are some fine moments, such as the title track and A Dying Wish.

Anathema's vocalist Darren White left the band after Serenades, and the group decided to induct guitarist Vincent Cavanagh as his replacement. As most fans know, Vincent remains their vocalist to this day, and on The Silent Enigma he does a decent job. Oddly, he sounds better here than on the follow-up Eternity- maybe because this one relies more on growling/speaking than singing? Anyway, this record has its moments, and the atmosphere it creates is fantastic, but it ultimately feels drawn out. Songs go on for too long without really doing anything. This was the band's last release of their doom metal phase, though even here you can make out hints of what was to come ("...Alone"). 2.5

what is perhaps one of their more underrated works, and perhaps one of the most underrated works of the british death/doom movement, the silent enigma delivers on nearly every front. it isn't heavy or crushing but for what it lacks in brutality it more than makes up for with the sheer beauty and control of the record. the riffs are great and the vocals hit just the right spot, and the record is far more varied than the mid-era atmospheric rock records these guys put out. if you're not one for doom metal don't let it scare you away, as far as doom goes this is a pretty tame album and is a perfect gateway into the genre if you're a fan of anathema's other work. superb stuff, especially for its time. :]

The beauty of this album is unrivaled. While there are rather bland parts (Sunset of Age, Nocturnal Emission,) the ups of the album (A Dying Wish, Shroud of Frost) more than make up for it.
