The dudes bitching about the vocals in the other soundoffs obviously don't know how to black metal. Vocals are the best part about this album.

Vocals ruin this album, Yes they are that bad in my opinion. Sounds like a parrot being boiled. In some cases the parrot voice adds to the raw emotion to it all and you feel like crying. Then it goes on for too long and you end up laughing. That's the mystery behind this album. You do not know whether to laugh or cry. The instrumental qualities and ambience make up for most of it though. If this album was released without vocals then i would give it a 4. I feel However then it would be losing all credability as the lyrics are a significant factor in suicidal black metal.
'Sterile Nails and Thunderbowels' in a brilliant track. Only song i can stand and admire even with those vocals.

Certainly tortured, those vocals of yours. That said, if your whole claim to identity is a ridiculous vocal performance unsupported by the barebones repetitive black metal music, you might be off a little. Bland and forgettable, were it not for the hilarious vox. Even the novelts of the singer causing himself literal physical harm to achieve the signature squeal is more of a poseur stance than any clever artistic trick or profound statement.

The vocals are absolutely amazing on here and sound completely tortured, the instrumental performance is as solid as can be-this is a black metal release that truly does showcase the best of the genre.

The album IS a classic in many ways and influenced the pseudo-subgenre of "depressive black metal," however the vocals destroy what could have been a beautiful album. The album is macabre and dark with beautiful ambiet and somewhat experimental parts, but the vocals sound like a cat being strangled and the album suffers for this.

I have very mixed feelings about this album. Musically, it's excellent, with the engaging guitar playing creating an effectively dark atmosphere and the drumming keeping up admirably (the title track). However, the vocals are so over-the-top that they often devolve into unintentional comedy (the troll-like ranting in the middle of "Sterile Nails and Thunderbowels"). I give points for the musicianship, but the vocals tarnish an otherwise largely successful black metal record.

Terrific. An unsettling piece of metal history, which is a quite challenging listen, but it's also very rewarding to fully dive into this suffocating vortex of dark riffs and agonizing screams... because it's something special.

If you enjoy hearing excited cat noises over somber black metal riffage than boy are you in for a real treat. Allegedly recording with a whole slew of wild, volatile cats assembled from the gnarliest cat clinics available, Silencer spent YEARS assembling them into coherent song structures. Believe the hype. The mewls are real.
