There's enough really good material here to make a solid, normal-length punk record, but I feel that all the theatrical tracks pull the rest of the album down--not so far as to make it unenjoyable, but a lesser album still. Still, the theatrics do work to remind the listener that this is, in fact, a concept record with an important theme.

Akin to Zen Arcade with its character-driven manifestation of crumbly mind-states and intermittent impulses, and The River by way of americana-jingles and triumphal destitution; this is cluttered exorbitance that just can't help itself, salmagundi be damned. Ran ragged and perspiring with perfervid desperation, roguishly structured -- but for all the self-referencing, easter eggs, bracketed moments of silence and parenthetical symbology, only a handful or so of these 29 tracks are standalone-great, even fewer worth hunting down specifically. This pile of broken shards has trouble perceptibly shaping the bigger picture: the 'acts' come off as claptrap, and the long anticipated conclusion is a cut short purport (aka acknowledgement that one doesn't exist) and a reflector-loop right back to square one. Which compels the listener to repeatedly trudge through until they begin to vaguely grasp the stuff about the doppelganger, the dream states, the love interest? Maybe. But what's foremost and palpable is that bandleader Patrick Stickles is a snarlin' visionary guy with an affinity for allegory and Daniel Johnston who's goin' through some shit -- valuable qualities when in the right hands, methinks.

Just a little too long. I'm glad to have that much new Titus, but some of the songs are hit or miss. Also, way too much filler. That being said, all of that doesn't take away from the scope and intensity of the album. It's classic Titus. Not the Monitor, not Local Business, which is not a good thing, nor a bad thing. The album is it's own, an hour and forty minute space rock opera that will definitely please any punk fan.

10 out of 10: This might just be what I'd consider the pinnacle of punk music. Through 90+ minutes, Titus Andronicus finally topped their debut LP with an incredibly HUGE sounding LP that still packs in the aggression of punk that got them to where they are today. With it's catchiness still comes a story of a man going through despair that eventually finds his doppelganger. This was the LP I was waiting for from Titus since I first got into them, and holy shit am I so happy it finally came.
