Los Angeles, California-based singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe is like a sparrow flying endlessly in purgatory: though the former is undeniably elegant and inviting, the latter presents itself as nothing except woebegone and lost in thought. You see, these two different things manage to play off each other to a T, which brings us to Chelsea's 2015 studio album Abyss. Packing 11 songs in all, this is a dark creature of a full-length record that is bound to get just about anyone's attention ASAP, and the haunting vocal deliveries from Chelsea herself alongside such vigilant ambition further enhances the notability of it. From beginning to end, Abyss proves to be an ultimately intriguing, smart affair that contains as many subtle qualities as it does relatively more blatant ones. I can say for sure that the album's content is almost flawless. So many bangers are to be found and so much amusement will definitely be had.

[INDUSTRIAL] Disturbing industrial noise experimentation, Mrs. Wolfe, you're doing industrial proud. Track order seems a bit off for me, but aside from that minor detail (which could definitely enhance the album's experience [at least for me]) this is a killer album w/ haunting vocals and an eerie noise rock (near-perfect industrial) atmosphere.

Good as always with Chelsea. However, I can't help but feel a teeny tiny bit disappointed when listening to one of her albums. I always expect it to be amazing, but they are "only very good". This one is no exception.

Dark, gloomy and depressing blend of folk guitars, loud noisy synth and wavering melodic vocals. An overall haunting but not shocking atmosphere, it is not actively trying to make you feel down but it lets you explore the darkness on your own. Vocal and synth production/balance is one of the shining highs of this record. Lay down in a dark room and put this one on loud in headphones and drift away. The title and cover art sum it up beautifully, floating in an mysterious abyss, woah. Highs: Carrion Flowers, Iron Moon, After the Fall, Crazy Love, Survive.

It's kind of hard to pin down Chelsea Wolfe. I suppose you could call her experimental-gothic-industrial-doom-folk-darkwave, but that's a mouthful. Her experimentation is quite apparent on Abyss, being rife with dark, noisy synths and a quite ominous ambience. The one thing that seems to keep everything from cascading into chaos is her voice, which remains a constant, beautiful anchor, keeping some things familiar while the background music becomes increasingly restless. Perhaps the best example of this is closer "The Abyss", which contains a discordant piano line that becomes drowned in guitars and synths before being replaced by equally discordant strings, while Wolfe's voice is strangely comforting and reassuring. It's strange and amazing indeed, but Chelsea Wolfe never intended her music to be anything but.

Permeated in weighty doom+gloom yet cohesive and cogent enough to persuade even the perkiest joy-heads into its stygian hellancholy depths -- her downplayed emotional vocal elegance and refusal to showboat makes for a lullingly placid descent, and are quite the consummatory contrast to the impenetrable walls of low-end industrial demolitions/cavernously eerie smaze/haunted folk tinctures/squall+squeals+sound-sucks.

The album starts off quite impressive. Lots of filthy noise and softer guitars that coalesce to remind me of her rearlier days, only bigger. The third track is practically a doom metal track with great electronic loops and rambient noise. Then the album just sorta goes off the deep end and ends up with more synthetic sounds and rquestionable production that don't quite match up. The songwriting on some tracks just feels sub-par and rdisjointed. It doesn't really pick itself back up. But the first three tracks remain some of the best work Wolfe rhas produced. Bring me more filthy music.
