| 3.0 good | Comatorium. | June 22nd 15 | Before the shit storm of ridiculous low ratings begin flowing in because this isnt the The Shape of Punk rthat Came, I feel the need rto give my two cents. Album is an absolute blast from start to finish and is definitely one of the most fun rand outright weird albums to grace my rspeakers this summer. Experimentation is present in abundance and more often than not the groups age rand expertise lead to rsuccessful songs that toy with a lot of genres and ideas. The album is gonna get ripped to shreds critically, rbut then again so did rTSOPTC when it came out. Im just gonna be over here jamming the shit out of Freedom and enjoying the rfact that a new Refused ralbum exists in 2015.

| 3.5 great | Jared Floryan | April 27th 15 | To say that everyone and their rebellious grandma were anticipating the newest Refused album is an understatement. This influential punk band hailing all the way from Sweden built themselves a grand legacy with The Shape of Punk to Come, a record that had a craving for some mature eclecticism with a side order of angry, but also unyielding craftsmanship; need I say more about it? To no one's surprise, the rest of what made up the new noises' discography couldn't quite match up to the offering in terms of both musical quality and especially the oh so tempting recognition. After well over a decade, Refused have now made a comeback of sorts. Enter Freedom, which is - to say the least - certainly the band's most polarizing effort thus far. Hype backlash as well as a violent disagreement between two parties aside, it's actually an overall solid recording worthy of bearing that grower status. Barring the unnecessary "Francafrique", just about every track here is fine and (in certain cases) intriguing enough to grab one's feeble little mind and shake it a bit. The album could've turned out a lot worse and I'm kinda relieved that Freedom didn't.

| 3.0 good | StrizzMatik | April 27th 15 | After almost twenty years of inactivity, what should
we have expected from Refused in 2015? If anything
Freedom is completely left-field and
shamelessly weird, catchy, dissonant and
experimental, throwing genres together with little
regard to the rulebook, and somehow it works just
fine while standing on it's own feet as a singular
listening experience. It's no Shape, in fact
it goes out of its way to not be, as much as
possible - and really stands out as it's own beast.
Many old fans are going to absolutely hate this,
guaranteed - those who can look past the jarring
musical shift in gears will have a deliciously weird
and solid Refused album in 2015. Welcome
back boys.

| 0.0 | Slex | April 27th 15 | Amongst claims of creative stagnation and boring songwriting as a result of Sonic Highways, Dave Grohl and crew throw quite the curveball, opting to record a hardcore punk album. This being the Foo's first attempt at the genre, it surely isn't the shape of punk to come, with mostly painfully obvious and trite lyricism and a muddled understanding of what will and won't work within the confines of a punk album. However, that's to be expected of newcomers to the punk genre and it's not quite the disaster most were expecting! 3.3/5

| 4.5 superb | MattGandee | June 25th 15 | While I realise that many people loved The Shape of Punk to Come for its relentless ferocity, it seems quite a few people are forgetting just how experimental that album actually was. Things like the jazzier musical elements, the use of samples, etc. were all unprecedented within the genre at the time of its release. I can't say Refused fail recapture the aggression that had previously defined them, because they're not even trying to do so. They're doing something completely different here - combining elements of their older material with a wide variety of other genres and influences, creating something that is not quite like anything I've ever heard before. And, in my opinion, that's a great thing. It's thrilling to me when a band experiments and tries something different, and the genre-hopping present in most of the songs here consistently surprised me and kept me on my toes. I suppose backlash was inevitable with a band of such stature putting out their first new album in 17 years - had they not changed their sound at all, you'd likely have people calling the album derivative and criticising the band for playing it safe. But Refused were a band well ahead of their time, and I dare say they remain as such. Will this album ever be able to claim the same legacy of The Shape of Punk to Come? No, of course not. That album is a landmark for the genre and then some. But I wouldn't be surprised if this new sound comes with a wave of imitators in the next 5-10 years. In the meantime, I've got a new Refused album to spin, and I couldn't be happier about it.

| 1.0 awful | Whatsgood | June 23rd 15 | Possibly the most disappointing album I've ever heard. Refused's attempts at experimentalism and restraint
come out sounding clumsy and overdrawn and yet even worse are their bouts of impotent rage. With the loss of
Jon Brannstrom, Refused has lost the dynamic guitar riffs and sample manipulation that made them special, and
traded them in for studio polish and inept blues riffs. (It sucks.)

| 4.0 excellent | DatsNotDaMetulz | June 24th 15 | Fantastic album, pretty eclectic and just the band doing what they wanted. The strong presence of funk and blues music may be a bit jarring on first listen but it's a fun and enjoyable listen. These songs will translate well live.

| 3.0 good | Momemik | June 16th 15 | Let's be real for a second and not a whiney pussy who is crying about refused selling out or something... If you had seen them live lately you'd know that this is not the case and that they still got what it takes to be one of the finest bands out there! This is not going to be as Groundbreaking as 'the shape of punk to come' but if the Album is Anywhere near the fist single 'Elektra' it will kick some serious bud! So stoked!!!
