How can I rate Synchronicity as compared to the previous albums? Well, many fans regarded it as The Police`s ultimate masterpiece, on the strength of pop-oriented hits such as Every Breath You Take, King of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Fingers, and Tea in the Sahara. Now, why isn`t this album rated as high as 5 stars? It is very simple: the inclusion of Andy Summers` Ode to Oedipus Rex "Mother" . The song is almost unlistenable, considering that Andy`s voice is not the best, the lyrics are simply insane and the whole performance is just a mess. This is, by far, the worst Police song I`ve ever heard. However, you still got Synchronicity I and II (I absolutely love the video), Walking In Your Footsteps, O My God and, to a lesser extent, Miss Gradenko and Murder By Numbers to save the day.

The Police's last album is also their best. The tracks from "Synchronicity II" to the end are all stellar, with "Every Breath You Take" and "King of Pain" being the two best. The band seems to be at their best-produced and cleanest here, which to me is a plus even if the attitude from their previous releases is slightly diminished. Sting's lyrics and vocals are both top-notch, and the rest of the band is at their creative best too. The only thing that holds Synchronicity back is a little choppiness through the first few tracks, as they don't flow terribly well together. However, this is still a stellar album and one of my personal favorites.

"meh....", that is all I'm getting out of this. Somehow Sting and co. have achieved a status of "80's rock gods", this being their crowning achievement, but I am not feeling anything from this. The only song of the entire lot that even moderately keeps my interest is the single "Every Breath You Take", and even then this is mostly due to it being a staple contemporary and future pop-culture, so a familiarity is almost unavoidable. Basically what I feel is that this could be the no. 2 most over-hyped band in the world behind Nirvana. 2.7/5

One of the best albums ever recorded. Synchronicity was somewhat of a return to form following the horn/synth-heavy Ghost In The Machine while also being the most experimental of The Police's discography. This record expanded the pop music vocabulary in many different ways, not least of which being stellar, timeless singles such as "Every Breath You Take", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", "King Of Pain" and "Synchronicity II" which showcased Sting's god-given pop smarts, Andy Summers' complex walls of guitar, and Stewart Copeland's manic drumming while also being complex and artistic. While it may not be as consistent-sounding as albums like Regatta de Blanc and Outlandos d'Amour, the true strength of Synchronicity lies in the peerless songwriting and variety of styles employed. It takes a little while to sink in, but once it does it's not hard to see why The Police remain one of the most popular bands of all time, critically and commercially.
