The great closer brought me to this record. Starts off excellently but one does feel like many of the songs read as wordy, listy rants that get a bit samey. As others have said, perhaps a little more melody wouldn't have gone amiss.

Had a hard time really clicking with this one. It's got the energy and passion, but lyrically it's a tad bit out there with cryptic lyrics. mewithoutYou have never really been too clear cut, but here there's a lot more to unpack. That being said it's definitely a grower and undoubtedly a worthy addition for the band. Veiled underneath the dense content is a very personal take from Aaron which we haven't gotten at this level in quite some time. It's apocalyptic in a worldly and personal sense, and I can't help but applaud them for creating a compelling album in a nonconventional way.

MewithoutYou have really settled down and become comfortable in this style of theirs. Pale Horses is their first album since their entry A-->B Life where they seem uninterested in impressing their intellectual peers. It's their only album that seems entirely confident in itself. Having said that, is it their best album yet? No. It's really good, though. It's not exciting by any means, and lacks any groundbreaking elements. It is, however, immediately palatable and effortlessly enjoyable. The emotional aspects of the album are glass-house revealing while the lyrics are cryptic as ever. The simplicity of the song structures and melodies work to an advantage, making it a solid listen start to finish. There's nothing unexpected here. No risks, no losses. It's a flawless testament to who they are as a band. As a side note, I would actually recommend this album first to someone who has never heard the band.

Working with a bevy of concentrated energy and mind-damaging influences that range from art rock to even indie, the Philadelphia-based rock band MewithoutYou have just unleashed what may very well be one of my favorite releases this year. All the tracks on 2015's Pale Horses flow seamlessly and the overall vocal performance by Aaron Weiss is outstanding in nearly every sense of the word. The drum patterns are also in brilliant harmony with the guitar work usually provided by Michael Weiss and Brandon Beaver. Put all of that together alongside the unhesitantly hypnotic atmosphere of the record in one giant jar and you've got brilliance handled by those who bear rather strong hearts.
