Cake is about the most consistent alternative band ever, but this isn't the greatest attribute to have when your music can be relatively mediocre. There are some gems here, as there always have been, and there's some shit here as well, which has also always been the case.

The album to me sounds like all the worst cake songs together on one album. The sounds are very loose, unrefined and lazy. That being said, the worst of cake is average.

Despite Cake's versatility being a key factor in gaining my interest as a listener, something about their debut outing just doesn't do it for me. Perhaps it's the over indulgence with the country themes/influences, or the lack of some of my other favourite elements that seem to make Cake, well, Cake. I can really only walk away enjoying 'Jolene' again and again, as for whatever reason that song jumps off the album at me.
