4.5 superb | Jared Floryan | September 7th 15 | Jagged Little Pill reminds me quite a lot of what my mom enjoys listening to. She's a wild demon all right, but that's part of the reason I love her so much. Getting back to Alanis Morissette's international debut album, this is an incredible record on nearly every account. From the hyper-passionate vocal performance she delivers to this LP's lush production quality, Jagged Little Pill's 57-minute duration never feels long, quite frankly. A landmark in the alternative rock genre - and also one for post-grunge depending on who you ask - it may be overplayed to death, but this is yet another one of those releases in which I think the extreme hype is pretty damn warranted. The affair is living proof that women do have a voice of their own.

0.0 | Foxhound | December 9th 09 | Jagged Little Pill is much more than an album that plays music, this is an album that shows a period of time. I can't count the times my mother slapped me on the head for screaming Alanis Morrissete lyrics at the top of my lungs on long car rides. I still to this day will sing, "isn't it ironic, don't you think? at slight turmoils in my life such as when it's my turn to take out the trash and I don't want to. Alanis used to get me through the day and even though years have passed and my slight crush for her has faded I will always adore this album.

3.5 great | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | April 5th 24 | My inner 90s white girl is a little too stuck up on softness and Fiona Apple to ever give Alanis Morissette her due time. Now that I am going through it and am finding a lot of pretty solid, crushing 90s cuts. Although her vocals can be grating, but they also portray the torn asunder emotionality perfectly.

3.0 good | IsildursBane44 | April 6th 20 | She has a super unique voice, and I appreciate the harder edged pop sound. I'm sure this was rad in 95', but this album sounds very of its time, and not in the best kind of way. Try Third eye blind and No doubt for some exceptional 90's pop rock.

3.0 good | EasterInTheBatcave | August 17th 16 | It goes on too long and misses the mark sometimes ("Hand in My Pocket," "Ironic"), but there are some great songs ("You Oughta Know," "Forgiven") and you have to admire Morissette's tenacity, boldness, and intestinal fortitude.

0.0 | SmileNerd | June 13th 15 | Alanis Morisette's sort-of debut album "Jagged Little Pill" is actually great. Although I originally didn't like this ralbum very much, it has grown on me. The excellent instrumentation and clever lyrics accompanied by Alanis' runique vocals (which admittedly are kind of an acquired taste) create an album that is excellent almost all the rway from start to finish.

2.0 poor | PKmonkey0401 | November 11th 14 | The first time I heard this, I was a young teen hanging out with a "cool" girl in her mid-twenties. I'd never heard Alanis Morissette before, she was the new "thing," and her abrasive voice and bold lyrics got my attention enough that after hearing "You Oughta Know," I went out and bought Jagged Little Pill for myself. What a let down. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it. I even pretended to like it. But in the end, this whole album feels like it's trying too hard, and it made me feel like I was trying too hard, and I dropped it.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | June 7th 14 | Even the most hard-won riot grrrls should be siked that this has sold 30+million copies. Music is polished and straightforward yet difficult to resist (note the deadly combination of soft hip-hop beat+soft-but-hard-at times alt-rock), lyrics are smart and comprehensible, anger seems authentic, tracks are consistent enough to forgive samey-ness and overlong album length.

0.0 | Lambda | November 1st 13 | A landmark record. Jagged Little Pill has sold over thirty-three million copies (the best ever for a female solo artist), won three Grammies, and topped the charts for weeks after its release. Much of the reason for this success is that Morissette puts her all into this record; so much so that, at times, her vocals skirt with over-the-topness- but thankfully they never descend into it. The production is excellent, and the bass playing of Lance Morrison (as well as guest Flea on "You Oughta Know") is fantastic throughout. The negatives here are that the drum loops can be boring at times, and I never really liked closer "Wake Up." Nonetheless, this is a very important, influential, and well done record. Highlights: "You Oughta Know," "Forgiven," "Mary Jane." 4.5

4.0 excellent | TayBad | July 2nd 13 | Never underestimate the power of nostalgia. It can make us look back fondly on times that may not have been so bright, or on things that may not have been all that great, but we love them anyways. But every once in awhile a bit of nostalgia turns out to be just as great as we remember it, maybe even better. Jagged Little Pill fits that description perfectly. I remember hearing many of the songs from this album on the radio when I was very young, probably four or five. I didn't know why, but I loved those songs. Hits like "Oughtta Know" and "Ironic" were great songs to grow with, but now they are even better because I can actually understand them and catch the meanings in them. Listening to this album was like a trip to memory lane, and it was a great trip. Many of these songs I had forgotten completely, until I listened to this album again. It has a few weak songs, this is true. But I can easily overlook this when it has so many other great tracks on it.

4.5 superb | AtavanHalen | June 15th 11 | While Nevermind might have defined a generation of aggressive, confused teen dudes, it wasn't until a few years later that the ladies had a voice. A much more radio-friendly one with half a dozen hit singles, sure, but a voice nonetheless. Alanis Morrissette, at this stage in her career, represents a refusual to accept things the way they are. She's mad as fuck and she's not going to take it anymore. Men are backstabbing, useless bastards. Bad luck follows the human race around every turn. Things will never turn out the way that we want them to. But Jagged Little Pill isn't a list of complaints, no sir. It's a bold, confident and uncompromising young woman that is going to deal with these problems if it kills her. Essential listening.
