Fripper was right: "it's been done so many times before, my man." It's enjoyable nonetheless. Some
of the symphonic parts like on the first track sound great and quite epic. This is of course with
lots of Coltrane worship with sounds that at most would have been innovations for '70s fusion. The
singing sounds surprisingly...dated. Like I'm listening to an Ella Fitzgerald tribute band. I
don't know if that helps set the mood for this as a complete throwback album, but if you accept
that fact, then it might help augment your enjoyment.

If nothing else, this record should win the "Most Aptly Titled Album Of The Year" award. You probably already know the deal with this album. Yes, it's three hours long, and yes, that is a bit of a daunting task if you want to grasp the entire thing. That being said, the album is surprisingly accessible, using a fusion of spiritual jazz, post-bop, and soul that grooves in and out of a wonderful ensemble. The compositions are immense, but they're pretty easy to listen to, especially when tracks are catchy, like "Cherokee". It's hard to choose a best song off the record because of its remarkable consistency, but if I had to choose it'd be "Clair De Lune". It's not the most original jazz album in the world, but it is so well done, down to the last detail, that it's hard to fault anyone involved for being "unoriginal". What stands up as the jazz album of the year (for me, and I'm sure a lot of others), The Epic is truly its namesake, establishing Kamasi Washington as a force to be reckoned with.

Really earns its hyperbolic tittle, I challenge anyone to find a track which falls short on composition, this is a modern sounding jazz album (in composition and in production) that doesn't sacrifice its heritage. One of the most enjoyable and easy to listen to albums of this length I have ever heard. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves, anyone who can create a 170 minute jazz album with a orchestra, a choir and a ten piece band deserves to be assaulted by accolades and awards.

Nothing really original, but a none the less pretty great all round album that is just far far to everlong. Rating this in one sitting doing nothing else would probably see me never bothering to finish it. Having said that I've seen him live and that was a lot more interesting, with the best of his material + improv.

Hey it's quite good, with all the spiritual shit and stuff!!! But c'mon it's boring and not engaging. Each part individually is quite cool, but even when you split the album in 3 (like you should, otherwise you'll die), you're left with an ok 50min-1h jazz album that has got a few good moments but which ultimately fails to grab you. I think I had it at a 4 before because I wanted to be kewl, and I can't believe it took me 4 years to realize that.
