This is the exact direction I hoped they wouldn't go in. Hardly any real riffs, everything's blown up
and over-the-top, Tommy is singing almost the entire time, etc. That's not to say it doesn't have
great moments, but the gratuitous wank overshadows just about anything else. Their weakest
album so far.
EDIT: So turns out this album is a grower. There are classic BtBaM moments here for sure and
there's a sense of cohesion to it similar to The Great Misdirect. However it could have done
without a couple tracks, i.e. 'The Ectopic Stroll' and 'Rapid Calm'.

These first two singles are awesome as hell. It's different than BTBAM's past stuff. It sounds like Dream Theater... If Dream Theater were much better. Ready to hear the rest.rEdit: And I was right. This album is incredible. "King Redeem/Queen Serene" is probably my favorite song from them.

This album is definitely a grower and nowhere as bad as I thought it was on the first listen, but it is still by far the worst thing they have ever done. The ethereous and manic emotional moments are completely gone, the guitar riffs are simplified, the songs now rely on repetitive structures, they have abandoned all their hardcore roots and replaced them by Queen and (bad) 70ies prog worship, there is no suspense, no dynamics and no anticipation in the songs, everything just sounds flat. Worst of all though this record just lacks in terms of atmosphere and emotion. Everything sounds giddy and quirky instead of serious, and focused. It's hard to believe that the band consists of the same members who wrote songs such as Selkies, Backwards Marathon and White Walls.

The new approach this band has been taking the past few years has only made the band worse and worse with each new material. This is easily their worst effort by far and lacks anything that made this band so great in the first place. Tommy vocals sound awful, the synths are laughable at points, and structurally it's very awkward. Another misstep

While still holding their core sound, BTBAM experiment with making a rock album and it is
FANTASTIC! This is a much softer side but do not be fooled, we still get a ton of growls from the
great Tommy and is amazingly diverse singing. This is honestly the best BTBAM album I have heard.
The instruments sound great as always and there is still a ton of BTBAM signature wankery on the
instruments (dunno why people are saying there is not). BTBAM tried something new and it is
awesome, the songs all work and everything flows so well. This is a giant love letter to the prog
bands in the 70s while still maintaining the BTBAM core sound. Just don't expect this album to be
the heaviest thing. Lots of Dream Theater meets Mars Volta meets Yes meets Rush! Great album! Just
remember, this is NOT like their previous work. BTBAM said they wanted to try something different
and it worked very well! This is a superb album and probably one of, if not the best, Prog album
to come out this year!

Honestly, this was kind of boring. Between the Buried and Me continue their path down more progressive waters with Coma Ecliptic. The issue is they seem to have stripped away too much of their unique quirky sound that made them so unique. The vocals also sound quite off-putting at times, and the music, although technically brilliant is lazy. It gets very repetitive which is really not helped by the huge run-time.
|2.5 average||EcoChocolatacchi | March 17th 18|
Opened for DTP among a few other bands, surprisingly from different walks of life. They were to play this 2015 album in its entirety. I have not touched the band since colors and had only heard about this album being a little softer. Not being much of a fan of harsh vocals live, i took that as a good thing, but i found my self in an ecliptic coma by the end of it.
|2.5 average||LunaticSoul | January 17th 16|
Their worst disc ever. The cheesy operatic feel of some songs it's just too over-the-top to work. Also, it's weirdly unmemorable on way too many parts. Just a few tracks stand out and keep this from being a disaster.

Was I expecting The Parallax III or Colors II? Yeah. Was I expecting an album to at least sounded like what BTBAM did in the past? Yeah. Did I get that? Not at all. Is it good anyway? Fuck yeah. / Favourite track: King Redeem / Queen Serene / True rating: 4,2
|3.5 great||Alabaster Jones | October 22nd 15|
Rarely ever do you see a band rooted in metalcore have the openness towards and will to do experimentation that Between The Buried And Me have. Though controversial, they've essentially been playing the music they want to play since their inception, and one would have to assume that remains the same with Coma Ecliptic. It's probably their softest offering, leaning heavily on progressive metal, but that's not to say there aren't good moments, despite the first trio of songs being pretty lackluster. "King Redeem/Queen Serene" really picks things up for the album, and the final trio of songs end on a triumphant note both in the context of the concept of the record and for the enjoyment of the record itself. Tommy Rogers has a hodge-podge of a performance, which sometimes can affect the songs pretty deeply, but the instrumentation behind it is solid and does well enough. It is the moments where everyone is on the same page that make moments on this record excellent, and while it's not even close to their best, it's still a decent record and is still distinctly BTBAM.
|2.5 average||cjbizzlebizzle | October 9th 15|
Where there is classic BTBAM and innovative riffs on this album there is 2-3x more space filled with things that are re-hashed or just not memorable. The great transitions
are seemingly gone or overshadowed by messy ones that make it seem like they are just trying too hard now. Supposedly a deeper concept lies beneath but the music doesn't make me interested to spend more time diving into it. Fun at times but ultimately a sloppy letdown for this group. Highlights: The Coma Machine through Famine
Wolf; The Ectopic Stroll is the worst song in their discography. (I have listened to BTBAM more than any other band over the last 10 years).
|3.5 great||Trey STAFF | September 11th 15|
I've never been a fan of their music, but this is much better. My main problem with these guys is the same one I've always had? they seem to lack any kind of direction or cohesiveness. Songs just go until they stop.
|3.5 great||darkbunny | July 16th 15|
Probably my favorite album from them since Colors. Super cohesive, not too much fat, very focused, and everything is on point. They don't really dip into cheesiness as much as they did on Parallax II I feel.
|2.0 poor||TheMoonchild | July 13th 15|
Coma Ecliptic is what Colors would sound like if it sucked. So there are very few growls on this album, but Tommy's clean voice doesn't have enough weight to carry the tracks. The riffs here sound so recycled and uninspired and the band just sounds like they're going through the motions. Colors and Future Sequence sound like beautiful soundscapes punctuated by moments of nightmarishness. Coma Ecliptic sounds like a day at work.

If anyone would have told me that BTBAM would create an album more progressive than metal and I would like it I would have told them no way would it be listenable. A lot of people will hate this album and say it is unlistenable. Here we are though and that is what they have done and it is a masterpiece. This album is so fleshed out with influences it's hard to comprehend how it all works but it does. From Pink Floyd, to Cynic, and even Tool you can hear all of it in this album but it still sounds original. Shame a lot of people are going to hate this album and miss out on a great album because this is extremely different from their previous work. Damn, if you like prog metal this will knock your socks off.
|3.0 good||Dmax28 | July 10th 15|
Interesting album and definitely a must listen at least once for prog fans. But I actually rthink that it would take many awhile to realize this was the same band if they didn't know rbefore listening. rI don't think fans of the band will just eat this up. The band has always rbeen hilarious but in a jaw dropping and extremely entertaining way. I always likened the rband to an extended and compressed nuclear explosion but that is gone (except for a couple rsections). You always had to either accept them for their brutality and cheekiness or go raway. The cheekiness is now almost all of the music instead of smaller sections or rundertones. Now with all these super odd clean vocals and drawn out mid tempo beats (some of rwhich are damn groovy) I bet it makes lots of longtime fans confused. I just don't see it rhaving as broad of an appeal. Though it isn't a face blast like their other albums so some rwho probably couldn't stand their other material will like it more for that. rAbout half the ralbum is good/great stuff. There is a lot of intricate and amazing stuff here. "Famine Wolf" r"Turn on the Darkness" and to a slightly lesser extent "The Coma Machine" and "The Ectopic rScroll". But it goes downhill big time with "Rapid Calm" and "Memory Palace". Two tracks I rdon't see myself coming back to soon. At least the last two tracks are a solid end to the ralbum.rI do think the screams on this album especially on the stronger tracks are some of the best rand most dynamic they have done.
|4.0 excellent||BRAman22 | July 8th 15|
Like all Between the Buried and Me albums, there are some great moments along with some that are mediocre at best. Unfortunately, that means that they have still not learned when enough is enough. Simply trimming some of the fat off this record may have been enough to turn it into something special.
|3.0 good||Floofus | July 6th 15|
It's a difficult album to get through, especially if you like their heavier albums like Colors and Alaska. This album is more Tommy's show this time around, with the band playing more for dramatic emphasis than actually enhancing anything.rIt's not bad, but there are no Mordecai's or Ants of the Sky's on here. An interesting prog-rock album that could have been much more.

(3/10/18): For their seventh studio record, Raleigh-based music unit Between the Buried and Me put much less emphasis on both the technical and metallic characteristics that helped get them to where they are. For the lion's share of the album's length, Coma Ecliptic has an AOR influence that is clear as day, not to mention taking heavy inspiration from 70s prog rock. The style of this BTBAM release is actually quite compact by their standards; almost as concise as the first two full-lengths. However, it'd be lying if I said I was satisfied by the results. Basically the album compositionally sounds better on paper than execution. There's a whole lot of bad cheese to be found within the way certain songs are structured (e.g. "The Ectopic Stroll"), rendered worse by Tommy Giles Rogers' awkward clean passages plus an unsteady production job. Coma Ecliptic isn't without moments of finesse (e.g. "The Coma Machine," "Turn On the Darkness") and BTBAM's efforts overall are well-intentioned, but it can be way too overblown and trite for me to look past the glaring flaws. Eeeeeeh, decent 2.5
|4.0 excellent||EdgyMessiah | June 16th 15|
The songwriting has definitely improved from their last full-length. I also think the prominence of the clean vocals and how Tommy weaves his screams in and out of them is a nice touch. Definitely a contrast to the somewhat flat harsh vocals on Parallax. Surprisingly, I feel like the genre-hopping moments meld naturally with the songs in which they occur, unlike Colors and Misdirect. Overall, this is a satisfying release.
|3.5 great||Momemik | June 15th 15|
It's definitely a solid album! That said and with the past efforts by BTBAM in mind it's definitly not the Album I hoped for. It has it's genuine moments and the overall songwriting is excellent. I love how different themes are persistently used in different songs. However the Rock Opera Motiv is occasionally off putting. They did some dialogue styled songs before on Future sequence however it took some time for me to get used to the style of some songs (e.g. ectopic stroll - great song overall btw) In conclusion it's an album that has it's BTBAM moments that make it worth listening to but can't quite compete with past efforts due to it's focus on telling the story (which I didn't focus so much on since I don't have the lyrics so far... Maybe that will add another dimension to the Album!)
|4.5 superb||Tand0022 | June 15th 15|
Pretty good overall, reminds me alot of Colours/TGM vibe in the meat of the album (Famine wolf to rapid calm).

Cannot get into this band at all. May be due to my lack of playing an instrument, but sounds like this band is just trying to impress me with their musicianship, but it just sounds like shit. And worse, it seems like they could actually make music that sounded good if they weren't so hellbent on trying to show their musical talents off.
|3.0 good||SonofSnow | June 14th 15|
Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, sounds a lot like late 80s and early 90s Prog ala Dream Theater and Queensryche in a lot of places.

BTBAM is my favorite band but unless this album grows on me over time, as of now I'd say it's my least favorite--as a whole--in their discography. I feel like Tommy brought too much of his solo stuff to this album and it just doesn't work as well. It has some great moments scattered throughout--maybe some of their best--but as a cohesive work, it's messy and I find myself getting bored and/or skipping things I find to be more obnoxious than enjoyable.
