After Matt Belamy's absolution following the making of such weak alt rock music, the band's success
skyrocketed. Through the highs, the lows, the black holes and the revelations, Muse stuck it out. But once they
faced resistance from detractors and critics alike, Bellamy created what he coined as "The 2nd Law": "no matter
what pretentious and overly political shit we spew out, our drones will regard it as gold."

Muse show on this album where their real problem lies and that is in not knowing when to stop. This album could be up there with the best records of their career but it isn't because many songs fall short due to poor decisions in the studio. 'Dead Inside' a good track ruined by a pointless hook. 'Reapers' closing riff killed by repeat shouts of "Here Come The Drones". 'Psycho' choosing not to leave the interlude as just that and weaving it into the track itself. The best tracks on 'Drones' are the ones where Muse believe in their ability to craft a damn good rock song 'Mercy', 'The Handler', '[JFK]/Defector' and 'The Globalist'. All of those tracks are simple and to the point with very little other than the vocals and the instruments doing the talking. If Drones was more like those tracks it would quite honestly be the best thing they'd ever done, instead it's just the best thing they're done in over a decade but I'll take that.. Welcome back Muse.

I want to like this, I really do. The music itself is really well done this time around, very hard rhitting when it needs to be and also soft when required. The closing track is absolutely rbeautiful. rThe problem with this album generally lies within the lyrics. I've never heard lyrics so bland, runinspired, pretentious, etc...The lyrics are way too heavy handed, even for a concept album with rpolitical commentary. If this was the mid 2000's, or if muse was a newer band attempting an album rso political in its concept, I may be able to dismiss it. But this is a band that's been around rfor quite some time now, and it's 2015.

I certainly appreciate the - relatively speaking - straightforward rock approach that the English triad Muse decided to settle with on Drones, as this musical direction makes for better consistency despite the overall spirit of the record being rather half-hearted in spots. If you take the time to evade "Psycho," "Revolt," and the interludes excluding "[JFK]" ("Defector" is a bit lukewarm without this number), then the finished product we're dealing with here would be an otherwise above-average effort. And no, Matt Bellamy, our asses do not belong to you; contrary to popular belief, it's our nipples that belong to drummer Dominic Howard.

Its good... great in places, but it all feels by the numbers and restrained. You have some fantastic cuts like the frantic "Reapers" and the crunchy "The Handler" but then you have some really weak cuts like the overly long "Psycho" and the unoriginal and lame "Mercy". The good still outweighs the bad, and in a front-to-back listen the entire thing flows nicely.

Dead Inside is great, very Undisclosed Desires like. Pyscho is alright, I love the riff, just don't love that it repeats over and over again, but maybe thats how its supposed to be story wise? Mercy is a grower, but essentially Starlight like. Reapers is super kick ass, very much what I wanted to hear. The Handler is one of the best songs on this album, very dark and very old Muse like. Defector is like heavy muse playing with Queen, love it. I might change my opinion, but for now, Revolt isn't good at all. Extremely poppy. Revolting doesn't sound like that. Aftermath is haunting and heavenly, totally wedding like and its great. The Globalist (imo) is another one of the best tracks of the album. The beginning sounds very soothing, goes into absolute prog madness, and ends once again very soothing, in a triumphant kind of way. I believe that the middle is not as long because, well, it doesnt take that long to blow up the world with bombs does it? Drones cleansed my soul, Matt used great layered vocals for that. Much better than the past few albums they have come out with.

Big riffs that don't wanna make you headbang with kinda-but-not-really political lyrics? Peak easy-listening, with most of the "hard rock" tropes being straight-up cliche, like the faux-metal tone or the absolute ridiculous length of the "prog" tune, "The Globalist". Ain't offensively bad though, just not that good.

The music's great but the lyrics are so heavy-handed and overwrought that this album may as well been written by Banksy. Pretend he's singing in Simlish and this is a respectable release.

Drones is a concept album which lyrically conveys political and cospiracy theory themes while having a much heavier sound than the previous adversly criticised 2nd Law. Songs are not dull or of poor quality: most of them have distinctive characteristics but they lack in cohesiveness. For example, "Psycho" having the band's trademark melody and the similarity in the drum pattern, could easily have become a second "Uprising". However a mixture of tedious lyrics and mismanaged refrain, restrain it from becoming so. "Revolt" sees Muse in an average pop-rock mode, while "Aftermath"/"The Globalist"/"Drones" were a poor ending. On the other hand, you have the pompous "Dead Inside", "The Handler's" memorable energetic solo and Bellamy's vocals in "Defector" to balance this enigmatic record. I found "Reapers" as the most solid, bone-crushing song of Drones which gives me the hope that Muse are on the right track in delivering a massive, follow-up album.

Drones has some of the spark of old Muse albums mixed with hard rock influence, but this will always be the album that will be remembered for, quite honestly, the worst song in their career "Psycho" featuring a lyric such as "Your ass is mine" will be held against Matt Bellamy for years to come.

So THIS is why we listen to Muse. Basically, this album attempts the same "epic" pastiche but this time with more rock in place of the symphonic and electronic elements. Some gems here including the absolutely haunting Aftermath and the rollercoaster that is The Globalist (seriously, if you love proggy madness, feast your ears on this), and The Handler which is guaranteed to become the arena rumbler of the bunch. The album does fall short due to two glaringly awful tracks, but thankfully the good tracks do outweigh them.
