This album. Holy shit. I'm absolutely floored. The production, the instrumentation, the track-listing, the closers and the opener, the interludes, but more importantly, the themes and the fucking lyrics. This album is what our modern world needed. Fuck Death Grips and Kanye (I still love them but still), this is the modern day Dark Side of the Moon, the zeitgeist is perfect.

kendrick still uses obnoxious pitch shifts or other grating vocal effects multiple times a song. in 'u' his voice is choked, presumably to show us the emotion he feels; but it doesn't sound good, it's painful to listen to. the production is well done but all the songs blend together, and for an album that's eighty minutes long, this is a death sentence. there are double albums shorter than this, with more variety between songs. i was praying for this to be over halfway through.

I can't tell you how big of a fan I am of good kid, m.A.A.d city. Ever since the first listen in late 2013, I thought it was a classic record, and knew Kendrick Lamar was an excellent artist, what with that and Section.80 in his discography. To Pimp A Butterfly is much different. There is so much to digest, so much to catch on this thing, and so much that needs to set in that there is no way that one listen will suffice to call this a "classic". Some time needs to pass, many listens will be needed, and no amount of comparisons or hype will change that. However, the notion that this could potentially be a classic in the future is both a valid one and an incredible one. All three of his LP's, then, will have had the focus of the rap game firmly on them for a time. The interesting thing here is, his rhyming ability and flow are at a peak for him, the production is a beautiful blend of jazz and funk that FlyLo, Thundercat, and Sounwave are all in their zone on, and his lyrics have never been as relevant and hard-hitting as they are on this. With that said, the possibility this ends up as a classic record is very strong, and that is truly impressive.

The fact that this can end up on multiple major publications' "Best of the Decade" list, despite the people making these lists not even understanding every core point expressed on the album, is pretty damn substantial. For an album that seems to be geared towards black people, I feel a noticeable shift within myself every time I let this sink in that's just... perfect. This album actively makes me a better (more considerate, logical, and sympathetic) person. This is the most thorough actualization of a piece of poetry that's equally simple and deep that I've ever heard. It's literally a goddamn rap opera that's way too cool to be considered an opera.

A very solid all around album by Kendrick, although the second half seems to be much stronger than the first. The lyrics are very much a social commentary, largely having to due with racial issues. The lyrical content is very powerful, even to a white kid like myself, so I can only imagine what these songs would mean to people that can relate to them.

Now just a hideaway exec-producer, Dr. Dre phones in some well-informed advice a few minutes into the album, which serves nicely as a proper preface: "Anybody can get it - the hard part is keeping it, motherfucker!" - if what surrounds that is a retort, Kendrick seemingly intends to. Dense+intense, playful+vivid, celebratory yet critical, racially charged and chillingly contemporary; lays the jazz/spoken word/funk on thick and offers a fluctuating array of new+strange vocal styles, which toughen things up, leaving those hoping for more "Swimming Pools" and "ya bish" probably a wee-bit disappointed when they wind up with "For Free?" and "boom boom".

A colossal statement of what hip-hop in the digital age can be, and a standard setter for hip-hop in the 2010s. I say hip-hop but this thing has all manners of influences ranging from Thundercat psychedelia to R'n'B and jazz. Some of the tracks are absolutely outstanding, none are bad, and the flow is pretty much uninterrupted. A vibrant, incredible and dare I say historical album that I should jam more often - and that I might bump? 4.8

There's nothing to say about TPAB that hasn't been said already. It has layers in just about every facet of every song on this album. Storytelling, social commentary, Kendrick's incredible flow that can't help but force you to lock in and pay attention to everything he says. The incredible jazz focused instrumentals are made to be turned up to eleven each time you put this LP on--Flying Lotus, Thundercat, every single artist on this project shines incredibly well. The first time I listened to this LP it blew my mind. Easily one of the best hip-hop albums of the 2010s, and will be looked on fondly years and years from now. Is it a mainstream opinion to say TPAB is incredible? Sure, but that's because it fucking is.

It took a while for me to come around on this one, but almost two years after finally coming around on it this is still my favorite album of all time. The way each track is able to sweep you into its diverse and beautiful instrumentation and then floor you with layer after layer of dense lyrics is something few albums I've listened to have ever captured. I've listened to this album countless times and each time I come out of it with a new lyrical gem that I missed, a more nuanced understanding of its themes/messages, and a deeper appreciation for one of rap's greatest works and arguably one of the greatest albums of all time. There's just nothing quite like it; thank you.

If gkmc is Kendricks rise to fame, to pimp a butterfly is the aftermath. The title represents Kendrick being exploited for his talent and celebrity to benefit those above him and in power in America. It leaves him in a place of despair and self hatred, realising he?s just part of the system and witnessing how they treat him and other black people. He reaches a point where he realises he has to go home with ?momma? where he goes to escape this depression but realises the exploitation and poor conditions of his home and those who live there. It?s here where he realises to promote himself and the black struggle, reaching a place of self belief but still realising the work that needs doing to take on the system that goes against black America. Kendricks pen game is on point here and he structured this album so well, full of powerful and potent moments. The mix of funk and soulful production (in particular the influence of Thundercat) is great here and matches the themes of the album well. The features are all pretty great and add to the album. Kendrick has matured and created a masterpiece, which when you sit down with, you realise how powerful and important this album is as a piece of art and commentary on the exploitation of black people in the US. A truly phenomenal record that is one for the history books. Score: 9.5/10

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly is my only 10/10 in the 2010s as of now. A decade-
defining masterpiece, Mr. Lamar (or Duckworth if you'd like) had somehow improved the
already fantastic good kid, m.A.A.d city with exciting new production choices and
beautiful integration of jazz, funk, and soul-influenced instrumentals. The rapping on
TPAB is as good as it can get and the album is a focal point of social unison as it's
lyrics are monumentally impactful and important for the current U.S. political climate.
This album has only increased in relevance as a classic with the passing years and it
will always deserve to do so.
Edit: As of November 9, 2020, I am happy to announce that the "only 10/10 of the 2010's"
part is finally untrue, but that by no means takes away significance from this record.

I knew Kendrick Lamar from Humble and DNA. And when I heard some people say that Kendrick was the Goat, I was kinda surprised. To me, rap in the 2010's was disappointing in comparison to earlier hip-hop. That rap had peaked. rI was extremely glad to be proven so wrong. The production is insane, the album offers so much while never feeling overwhelming. It mixes a lot of kinds of rap, the tone keeps changing from sad to exciting, from slow to hype as fuck. It's amazing.

Beautifully constructed, To Pimp a Butterfly is one of rap's most important albums. The message far outweighs any musical shortcomings, as Kendrick is one of the few rappers to go an explicitly pro-Black after achieving huge mainstream success. The album is definitely a bit long, a bit overblown, but this novelization of black culture deserves the extensive run time. The album jumps from West Coast G-Funk to jazz and more mellow tracks, reminiscent of Little Brother and No ID. The production value is impeccable. Kendrick sometimes relies on some annoying vocal styles, but it does seem to fit the concepts, and he is by far the best lyricist in the game right now, maybe of the last 5 years period. There really aren't any outright attempts at radio play either, and it's all for the better. The overlying theme is for Black people to love one another, and the emotional toll on the listener is overwhelming at times (no matter the color of your skin). Kenny put everyone on notice with TPAB, and while it's definitley his least accessible record, this is the one people will be talking about decades from now. Standouts include Wesley's Theory, King Kunta, For Free?, Complexion, Blacker the Berry and i.

I could write paragraphs about either the crazy instrumentation, the lyrical juggernaut that is this album or just state that in the age where every Beyonce single is taken apart and deconstructed to be some modern gospel, TPAB is entirely worthy of multi-page write-ups and imaginary interviews that distinguish modern music hack journalism. Shame about Modern Man's lack of replay value, it unwrites "I" as a definitive closure to the sonic textures of unease instead closes with a purported mock interview with 2Pac, which reads like a long fanfiction.

To Pimp a Butterfly is not only the best hip-hop album I have listened to in a while, it's one of the best I have listened to. Period. Here, Kendrick reaches his full potential - As an mc and a songwriter, giving some of the most memorable hooks seen in any mainstream hip-hop album in a long time, and the finest rapping currently in the mainstream game. It all wouldn't come to much without solid production to back it up, and Butterfly presents one of the biggest jumps any rapper has ever taken - From the standard and fairly minimal beats often found within GKMC to a sprawling epic of soul, funk, jazz and gospel that moves in and out seemlessly and never gets wrapped up in its fandom for the greats that inspired it (James Brown is very much the forefather of King Kunta, while Miles Davis can be felt in nearly every jazz inflextion practiced here). I've listened to Butterfly for over a year at this point without it losing any luster, and with that, I no longer have any question that years down the line, To Pimp a Butterfly will be on the echelon of greats along side the likes of Illmatic and 36 Chambers. A masterpiece of hip-hop that proves that the explosion of trap rap (a genre that very resolutely avoids technical prowess and sociopolitical relevancy) does not mean conscious, forward thinking rap is a bargain for failure.

Wow. Just wow. Just when I thought Good kid was awesome, Kendrick makes a second phenomenal album in a row raising the bar for not only himself but the whole hip-hop genre. Not one song on the album is a miss. What Mezzanine is to Massive Attack, Master Of Puppets to Metallica, that's what To Pimp A Butterfly is to Kendrick - a 3rd album that is truly a benchmark in the music community. Every single track tells a very that always manages to impress, combining funk, jazz and soul, matching Kendrick's verses and the song's flows perfecty. The main standout would be the ultimate track, Mortal Man - an absolutely 12-minute piece where 2Pac (yes, 2Pac) is interviewed by Kendrick himself. Now I am most certain the next CD he will make is a lock to be a bigger classic than this one. Mark my words: he will go down as one of the biggest rappers ever, and so will his albums, up there with Aquemini, Illmatic, The Marshall Matters LP and other albums more alike.

The black struggle to survive in the tumultuous racial climate of America has bubbled to the surface in this decade, and To Pimp a Butterfly will someday be looked back on as a masterpiece of black sound in 2015. Beyond the social connotations and musical innovations from the jazz and funk infused sound that Kendrick effortlessly tackles, the album makes important strides in conveyance of emotion through lyric and instrumental. To any doubter, one only need to look to U - perhaps the most painfully accurate depiction of desperate depression and self-hatred ever to come from the genre.

Though the duration of this album would've still been able to take advantage of being slightly trimmed down, To Pimp a Butterfly is most definitely worth sitting through. American rapper Kendrick Lamar toys with hip hop, funk, jazz, and soul with as much success as a bodybuilder wielding a megaton hammer, and his foray into poetry is quite impressive. "Mortal Man", a 12-minute epic, showcases his relatable spoken word verses almost perfectly. There exist music releases such as this in that the hype is pretty goddamn believable, no matter how cartoonish or realistic. I honestly think Kendrick's new full-length record has what it takes to further affect gender equality and discrimination, but then again, here's me talking out of my ass.

Everyone knows I'm not much of a hip-hop guy, but To Pimp a Butterfly received so much praise that I had to get it. And I'm glad I did, because this a fantastic record on a number of levels: variety, production, lyrics, imagination, ambition, flow. "For Free? (Interlude)" and "The Blacker the Berry" are two of my favourite songs of the year. If I was more into hip-hop as a genre this would get a higher score from me; as it stands, I get the album, but don't entirely feel it. 4.3

With this album growing on me more and more it is just reassuring me how worthy this really is of a 5. Truly a masterpiece with awesome jazz influence and poetry. Standouts include "King Kunta" "These Walls" "U" "How Much A Dollar Cost" and "Mortal Man" Hard 5.

If there's a single thing Kendrick proves on To Pimp A Butterfly, it's that he's much more than just a rapper. It's difficult to do justice to just how incredibly catchy, well written, and full of character every single track on here is. Is the "ongoing poem" structure that continues throughout the entire record pretentious? Absolutely. Does the faux Tupac Shakur interview make me cringe a little? Without a doubt. But when an album can completely hold my attention for nearly 80 minutes, that's a feat that very few if any artists can achieve. Which is why To Pimp A Butterfly is one of the most incredible hip hop album I've ever heard.

I'm officially giving this title the AOTC award.... the Album of the Century. Each and every track is great, although the standout tracks (for me, at least) are track 07 (There Is Only One God And His Name Is Death) and track 11 (Starving for Friends). Anyone who says this album sucks is usually a Jonny hater. No matter how good it is, they will say otherwise. Not because the music is bad, but because of their personal feelings towards Jonny, which is stupid. You don't do the same with actors, do you now? If Jake Gyllenhaal was a terrible human being.. would you still call Donnie Darko a lame movie, just because of Jake's personality? No, you wouldn't. AOTC. I'm calling it.

The anger and theme of black power definitely proves to be a worthy story line throughout the album. I respect what he is trying to do but the fact of the matter is, it just does not sound good to me. His flow on Good Kid was so much better. His style in this one is just not to my liking.
