Major, major. Major label, major hooks, major complaints from fans of their old material that they supposedly sold out... those fans are a major pain in the ass, because New Wave flat-out rocks something major (aye, this last one was a stretch, but whatever). Anthemic, sing-along choruses, crunching guitars, a solid rhythm section, and impassioned vocals consistently dominate this album. Old-school fans would be wrong in dismissing this album - honestly, who cares if part of the DIY aspect that characterized their past albums is glossed over for a fuller sound? Get over yourselves, dudes and ladies - and fans looking for a good punk/rock hybrid in 2007 should give this a shot. Check out "Thrash Unreal," "White People for Peace," the title track, and "Up the Cuts."

Springsteen really ruined music for generations after him, didn't he? Cause now any anthemic song with raspy vocal is immediately Springsteen-like. And every half-decent punk band that fails to punk in the first place turns to him for inspiration. Not Against Me!'s worst, but a forgettable experience nonetheless with many songs falling short. Current state of the singer notwithstanding, I'd call this too cock-rock-sided.

This one interested me because the lead singer, Tom Gabel, identified as transgender recently and plans to transition to living as a woman. Their next album is going to feature her as Laura Jane Grace and is called Transgender Dysphoria Blues. Hearing what they're like now and how masculine his voice is, I'm really curious to hear that album and what it'll be like. That out of the way, I was pleasantly surprised by the album. I don't know a whole lot of punk rock bands, but Tom seems to have a pretty unique singing style/voice. That plus the fact that his intelligence shows makes it hard not to like this stuff. I like what he talks about. The Ocean addresses his gender dysphoria as well, which was really cool. My favourite tracks from this are probably Stop!, Thrash Unreal, The Ocean, and Piss and Vinegar.

Against Me!'s New Wave is a little bit like Dylan going electric. You lost a lot of the BS rhetoric, smoke and mirrors etc. to be replaced only with conventional rock wisdoms (and instruments). Rock on!

Seemingly standard, straightfoward rock n' roll reveals it's pop/punk/blues roots with repeated listens. This record sounds heavier than the average FM rock, but really aims at hitting one in the gut with the brute force of its catchiness and anthemic choruses. This feels like some sort of protest record. Against what, I couldn't tell you, but the elements of revolt are present in the DNA of most of the tunes on this album. Great rock record, but not one I'd listen to very frequently.

I know so many people are calling Against Me! sellouts now, when really theyve just evolved. I love this CD, its way better than anything theyve put out so far, and if they keep it up, they could really become a pop/punk superpower.
