4.5 superb | antihippy | June 15th 07 | Imagine a jazzier meshuggah. it's average time length is 1 and a half minutes, so it doesn't drag and remains interesting throughout. he uses his breath controller effect more on this album, using it as part of the song instead of just the solos. the vocals on this album are pretty strange too, with tomas haake (meshuggah's drummer) using a vocoder to effect a reptilian voice. the drums, supplied by morgan agren, is on par, if not better, than tomas haake, doing what tomas haake do best, but also creating interesting fills too. the guitars are nearly the same as what meshuggah is doing though, with the bass generally following what the guitar does. there are other instruments on this album too, from an organ, to a yidaki (didjeridoo), and a saxophone.
all in all, a very good and interesting listen. 4.5/5

3.5 great | Britch2tiger | February 27th 16 | Certainly much better and refreshing than that of Meshuggah's Nothing album. Was going to make an attempt at a horrible pun, but I got nothing here... All jokes aside, you have here a near-grind album that I think John Zorn would appreciate for all the technicality and great musicianship. Now if these two could make an album together, I dare to think THAT work might even rival to that of Naked City's self-titled album.

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | February 21st 15 | More deep in thought than the cosmos and no less untamed than the output from his main band, the extreme/progressive metal outfit Meshuggah, Fredrik Thordendal had unveiled a sickeningly explosive, yet also Machiavellian beast in Sol Niger Within. This is one extensive track separated into 29 songs which are - whilst short-lived - breathtaking. It manages to merge complex, jazz-like aspects and furious guitar-driven diatribes together, all while only missing a beat or two. Fans of Meshuggah might be reminded of Catch Thirtythree, and others may or may not recall whatever concoctions Devin Townsend has up his arsenal. Simply put, this is some awesome material; listener discretion is advised. You will be probed hard.

3.5 great | Dis_Con_Nec_Ted | February 20th 11 | This is basically a weirder Meshuggah with jazz fusion guitar leads and black metallish vocals. And somehow it does work.
