4.0 excellent | StrizzMatik | April 18th 15 | The naysayers are fucking trippin', this album is amazing. It's no Angel Dust or King For A Day (and really 20+ years later who was expecting that), but it's solidly better than AOTY or any of the pre-Patton material easy, and sonically stands on its own in Faith No More's discography while retaining all the things you like about them. Separation Anxiety, Superhero, title track, Sunny Side Up, Matador and Cone Of Shame all ripppppp hard and should silence anyone who thinks this band isn't still a creative force.

4.5 superb | tuckoo | April 28th 15 | It's love on first sight but after a while you experience it's going to be a keeper coz the love keeps growing.
This album adds a very worthy chapter to the classic FNM history. It's songs are very refined and sound somewhat more serious than previous material. The production is lovely like in old times. It's time well spent to sit back and enjoy the sol invictus experience. Over and over ..... and over again.

3.5 great | Jared Floryan | April 28th 15 | Alt-metal titans Faith No More will be discussed about for generations to come until we all become skeletal puppets, a fate that I find most likely for whatever reason. Whether it be through frontman Mike Patton's diverse vocal range coupled with his own amount of charm or the band's ability to craft songs that are unforgettable as they are dizzying and bombastic, FNM is one tough entourage to avoid. Sol Invictus, their first studio recording since 1997's sarcastically-named Album of the Year, signifies their reawakening. Though it may not be the mildly mainstream-ready The Real Thing or the influential chimera that was Angel Dust, people shouldn't be so quick to expect this comeback release to resemble those two inside and out; if anything, Faith No More's newest offering is a spiritual successor to the effort it follows in terms of both quality and overall length - and I'm one of those jizzlobbers who takes what I'll get tbh. Claims of unremarkable production alongside some padding aside, it's nice to hear Mike's vocals again, not to mention taking note of the instrumental chops provided by Billy Gould, Jon Hudson, Mike Bordin, and Roddy Bottum too.

3.5 great | Resident Metalhead Piranha | July 11th 17 | The return of Faith no More was a surprise to many considering how they changed the music landscape along with Kurt Cobain and friends and seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth save the charismatic Mike Patton. But alas, they're back, and Sol Invictus is a welcomed return of the juggernauts. It may bear more resemblance to King For a Day and Album of The Year instead of the Real Thing or Angel Dust, but that's not a bad thign by any means. The title track opens the album differently than previous works with building drum rolls and calm vocals. It's different but is a good first impression. "Superhero" is the standout tune here with its rockin' verses, impressive buildup, and epic scope most closely resembling their older material but standing out on its own. The guitarwork also stands out for its catchy riffs and terrific guitar solo. The production values are great as usual with a more rock-sounding production than Album of The Year. "Seperation Anxiety" is a beefy chugger, "Cone of Shame" is moody, and "Motherfucker" is a complete deviation from anything they were doing up to that point but a good tune as well. "From The Dead" reminds me of the better material of AOTY and closes the album on a good note. Sol Invictus takes more time to sink in compared to other output by the band, but "Superhero" alone should entice you to this impressive reform of the legends of alternative metal.

2.5 average | EasterInTheBatcave | June 29th 16 | What's missing from Sol Invictus-- and indeed, what has been missing from all of Faith No More's records post-Angel Dust-- is atmosphere. Angel Dust had a clear sense of purpose. The title, track order, artwork, and music itself all aligned with it. From that sense, the atmosphere was derived. Sol Invictus feels like simply a collection of songs, rather than an utterly cohesive musical statement. This is not to say Sol Invictus is a bad record, only that it lacks the atmosphere that characterized the band's best record and thus is not propelled into the stratosphere like that one was. Sol Invictus is also too short. Another two or three tracks would have been appreciated. And indeed, even some of the songs that are here are too short ("Sunny Side Up," "Motherfucker"). However, most of these songs are excellent, and the performances are fantastic. Sol Invictus is not as good as Angel Dust, but it is a satisfying comeback

4.0 excellent | Manet | May 13th 15 | This is definitely a grower. I wasn't quite feeling it when I heard it the first and second time, so I landed on a 3.5. But then after a few more listens it suddenly struck me as a great album. In this case, excellent, as I'm now moving it up to a 4/5 rating.

4.0 excellent | sinisterplague | April 29th 15 | But really though, I know its been a while since you've heard a new FNM album, but try to think back. Did you really think any of their stuff was "brilliant" the first time you heard it, or did you have to listen to it a few times for it to sink in? The first time I heard it "Angel Dust" I was like wtf is this. The first time I heard King For a Day, I was pretty underwhelmed, but it grew on me. rJust give this album a chance. Its not as mediocre as it sounds on first listen. Their newfound subtlety kind of works for them. It's no Angel Dust, but was anyone really expecting it to be?
