3.5 great | Wolfe | February 25th 15 | AOTY I'm calling it even though I haven't heard it or the other albums that are gonna be released this year. I like to make assumptions. Haters gonna hate. This year just keeps on getting better and better and better and better, first this other band now this one. It's February and it's beginning to feel like a good year in music, not like the other years. This already beats your AOTY, MOTY, GOTY, COTY, LOTY, WOTY, JOTY, XYZOTY, BOOTY.

EDIT: goddamn, Piss Crowns are Trebled is a monster of a track. the whole album is great, but the last half of that track.

2.7 average | Rudy K. EMERITUS | March 24th 15 | From the depths of unsullied innocence, the band find the sweet token of creativity that most seem to miss or forget, floating sullenly in a void of wasted invention, imagination and a deep pool of potential just waiting to be plucked by those who are willing to look. You've heard it all before and don?t care to hear it again, the mindless ranting and raving of how old and stale a movement can become, what once shook bone and bent earth soon becomes a dreary and mindless meandering. At a time when it all seems lost, where the good, the great and the mighty are now far and few in between, the inertia is broken as Godspeed You! Black Emperor grants the engrossing and full spectrum of colour. Not for a long while has such an album immediately taken hold of me, such alluring orchestrations hypnotising me from start to finish. Quite honestly an album that leaves one in awe at its majesty, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress is impressive to say the least, and speaks wonders of where the band is to head next. Let yourself go and delve into the psychedelic wonders of this record, sink into its atmospheres and be ensnared by its odd divination.

4.0 excellent | Karambolage | March 24th 15 | WOW....Right now I am so in awe, that it hurts.rI was hoping, but not expecting something like this from Godspeed
anymore. Allelujah was meh for me, and the first song off Asunder seemed "ok", but not more..So. After three listens
now, I can say that Godspeed is back at their best. Man..these drones are so heavy, and the third song the perfect! intro
for PISSED CROWNS ARE TREBLED. That monster is all I want from them and more! SOOO heavy, so heartbreaking. I'm
sorry for this "review", but I had to say that right now. My ears hurt so good.

3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | February 24th 15 | Godspeed You! Black Emperor have the reputation of always pushing the envelope, always experimenting with their sound, and just generally being one of the largest bands, in both size and sound, that ever played. That's why it's such a shock that this record can be perfectly be described as safe, and ultimately rather unimpressive. The album starts out decent enough, with thundering drums providing the perfect backbone for the tracks 10 minute run length. Then, some nice drone tracks come into the fray, rather unambitious in nature, but not bad. The closer is the best song on the album, utilizing Godspeed's unique crescendo strengths as well as some nice drones and strings to boot. Altogether, it's a nice listen, as there isn't any bad tracks, but it's short length and lack of anything truly gripping (something that has always been on their records) make it a sort of uninteresting and unengaging experience. A bad album by no means, but we all know they're capable of so much better.

Bump |
4.0 excellent | capes | September 25th 19 | At first I was annoyed by how similar its sound was to Allelujah, and also how long the drones were getting relative to the main tracks. But, it grew on me. It's their least dazzling release up to this point, but their songwriting hasn't faded quite yet. They're still leagues ahead of the competition who's either turning into passive ambience, or is still not growing past the concept of soft... THEN LOUD. 'Peasantry' is quite the beautiful opener, following a sinister 6/8 melody. It sweeps into a fantastic melody towards the middle, good enough to rival any of the band's best. 'Piss Crowns' admittedly does about the same thing to a different tune, though the main difference here is the familiar steamroller section of a closer. Perhaps it's lacking some meat on the bone, but these two songs are worthy enough to keep me relistening to them. And if I'm feeling generous, I don't skip the drones!

3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | November 11th 15 | Energetic opener, drone/atmospheric for 15 minutes and then one hell of an ender. 'Peasantry' and 'Piss Crowns' each find strength in repetitive leads and epic builds to climax. Instrumentation all around is top-notch with the string sections being the highlight carrying the listener through the strongest parts of the record. Overall the mood feels somewhat in a dark place but plenty of high, hopeful moments are heavily accented throughout.

0.0 | altertide0 | June 16th 15 | Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress is like 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! with more "We Drift Like Worried Fire" and less "Mladic". At least the drone tracks deliver.

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | April 20th 15 | May the sugary thespians of yesteryear drown themselves in post-apocalyptic waste and lean their backs against the unyielding plaque; a plaque that only Godspeed You! Black Emperor is willing to construct even in the darkest of times. The playwrights shall one evening see the post-rock band's latest work as something more than just pandering to the crowd who holds onto above-average intelligence, as Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress is like a thunder cloud sleeping inside tranquility and a very sufficient amount of artistic relevance. GY!BE should be presented with crowns courtesy of the mongrels whom think they have winning complexions.

4.0 excellent | Kronzo | April 17th 15 | Godspeed, unsurprisingly, remains in top form with this LP. The closing track is fantastic and is the highlight of the album. The grand instrumentation, while being par for the course with this band, is always breathtaking to hear since no one else can do it much better. The drone tracks are an interesting change of pace, but run a little bit too long in the middle of the record. Overall, definitely one of the better records of 2015. 4/5

Bump |
3.0 good | VengeanceCactus | March 25th 15 | Godspeed return with what is an undoubtedly solid release, but one that does not reward as well as expected with repeated listens. It's a very immediate record, one that clearly works amazingly live, but not as great as a studio album. Still, it's crushing, massive, detailed, and supremely well executed. This is a more than worthy addition to the GYBE canon.

5.0 classic | HarrySmalldini97 | March 24th 15 | Its not like Godspeed haven't done drone music before, and in actual fact their drone pieces have never been this thick and distorted. In my opinion this is their best drone work as a collective band, they are all contributing to the soundscape and it works incredibly well. The composed side of the album is also fantastic, the first movement of the piece (its a 40 minute piece, I think if more people treated it as one composition they would love it as much as me) takes the more eastern rock vibes from their previous album and makes it a bit heavier. The climax section of the piece, which is as long as whole pieces from previous albums, is fantastic. This all adds together as another fantastic record from these guys. I don't understand why this isn't getting more positive reviews, people are treating this like a safe alum? I guess only Godspeed can be criticized with producing a safe album of a single 40 minute piece.
Bump |
3.0 good | Friday13th | March 24th 15 | First track is good with the harmonic minor/egyptian scales put to good use for the slow-burning riffs. Then come two tracks of nothing but ominous drone sounds. The final track is where it's at with violins in counterpoint with guitar riffs making a heavy but beautiful sound. However, there comes a point when the listener decides that dull ambiance that would put Hans Zimmer to sleep does not a good build up make. Only half of this album is worth giving a listen.

4.5 superb | Comatorium. | March 24th 15 | I had the privelege of seeing GYBE a few years ago, so I am vaguely familiar with their monster of a track referred to as
"Behemoth," so my excitement was somewhat dampened. But let's be honest, that show was a long time ago and I smoke a lot of
weed so fuck if I remembered that shit. The studio version and new album from GYBE is a massive behemoth indeed, with biting
guitars building to a classic god'spee climax in the opener followed by two tracks of visceral, pounding, monolithic drone. Stupid
title aside, "Piss Crowns are Trebled" stands as the band's single heaviest moment and possibly their best song since the Slow Riot
days. Holy fuck, I cannot overstate the last track's power. Forget what you think you know from the bootlegs. Listen to this album.
