With Inmazes, Vola has given us a delicious progressive metal outing layered with thick,
groovy riffs; pristine, soaring vocals, and tasteful electronics. But the really cool thing about
it is that all its parts are so thoroughly integrated that it doesn't come off as subversive so
much as what metal may be "supposed" to sound like here in 2015. It sounds
like what metalheads of the 80s might've imagined the "metal of the future" to sound like.

Progz (that's prog + djenty tones m/) + pop anthems = a big big sound. Indeed, it's gigantic. The dreamy synths and poppy choruses are the trve winners here specifically because they allow the cliche well-defined genre to wander in unknown territories. However, the djent parts sound way too similar and are often too prominent mix-wise compared to these beautiful synths. It's kinda epic tho.

After listening to their song titled "Gutter Moon" on YouTube, I decided to bandcamp these fellows and purchase the album, money well spent. I've bought several albums off of bandcamp these past few months, and some will be a one-time listen only to be set back in the library to be surfaced again when my iPod decides to play it (I keep it on shuffle). This album however is one of the few that I plan on playing over and over until it is branded into the depths of my brain. It has all the heaviness of a Progressive Metal band and the catchiness of an 80's pop band, that catchiness is one thing I really enjoy, Prog bands nowadays never have anything that will adhere to you, it's all just a mash up of sound with no structure. One way to classify this sounds is if Meshuggah had a baby with A-Ha. "Meshugga-ha". Give these guys a much deserved listen I don't think you will be disappointed in what you hear.

Stylistically fascinating, Vola's debut full-length album Inmazes is an exception rather than the rule as far as the overall sound of progressive metal is concerned. As you scour through the record, picture a truce finally being made in the midst of a ravaged arena; it's a cheesy sentiment, yeah, but I find it a rather sufficient comparison as well. The spacier, synth-inspired elements more often than not add to whatever charm this freshman release has, and trust me when I say there's a buttload of likeability you can dig up here.
