| 4.5 superb | Andy H. B. | June 13th 10 | This album was like "BLAM!" and I was like "whoa".

| 5.0 classic | chambered49 | May 29th 12 | California finds that perfect balance so many artists strive for, that oh-so thin line where accessible pop sensibilities collide with abstract, inventive, honest expression. An album basking in the numbing sun of the West Coast's evil underbelly, looking for heaven but finding death. Patton's love letters of suicide and loss reflect the outer-coating of The Golden State - a picture-perfect postcard on the outside but take a closer look and you'll find a ravenous demon whose hunger can never be satisfied.

| 4.5 superb | Doppelganger | December 20th 06 | When you listen to any of Mike Patton, the man who can take a sample of a belch and still turn it into an epic 7-minute masterpiece, some of these words come to mind: crazy, insane, loony, demented. This album touches every genre from metal to surf, and is much more organized than that madfest "Disco Volante." Every song on here slams into a different style, keeping things fresh without coming off too gimmicky. Patton's the man.

| 4.0 excellent | Froot | June 25th 14 | A cacophony of different styles brought together from just about every form of music, that cartoonishly dances around a bonfire of conventions as it assaults you with its snarky songwriting and production that sounds like it was handled simultaneously by the owner of a Hawaiian hotel resort, and the Addams Family.

| 5.0 classic | MeetMeAtBarItalia | July 13th 16 | California is an exceptional record, accomplishing even more than their two first records in a shorter cut. The band maintains its creativity while writing tighter, more-melody focused songs, jumping from style to style, reinventing themselves as a pop music smorgasbord. Although the band seems to chasten itself on this record, the twist is in the lyrics, where Patton, Spruance and Dunn offer a stark and unforgiving portrait of our absurd world, by discussing recurring themes like the threat of death, the domination of machines over men, the manipulation occurring in-between humans and the vacuousness of western society with abstract and deeply disturbing imagery. An album this bleak could be overbearing, but the incredible musicianship finds a perfect balance between experimental and accessible : the structures are both focused and unusual and the melodies simultaneously immediate and eerie. Songwriting this adventurous, varied and dynamic should never go unnoticed, and I feel like this band is not praised the way it should be.

| 4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | February 24th 16 | "The best way to live in California is to be from somewhere else. Probably the best way is to be from Mars" - Cormac McCarthy. For all of Mr. Bungle's avant-garde intricacies on their first two releases, it would've been preposterous to call them an accessible band. California proved that they could be. It opens the floodgates for people turned away by the ceaseless experimentation of Disco Volante and the brashness of the self-titled. With songs like "Retrovertigo" and "Pink Cigarette", the two most conventional songs the band ever made, it's much easier to get into their sound. The band doesn't sacrifice their personality, though, as those songs both deal with some heavy topics through subtle lyricism. Elsewhere, the band morphs surf rock and doo-wop with some jazzy experimental rock, and it generally sounds as refined and focused as ever. Mike Patton, of course, is a force to be reckoned with vocally, especially on the one-two punch to end the record. Regardless of whether you've loved Mr. Bungle for a while or if you're just getting into them, California is a fantastic album, so have at it.

| 5.0 classic | Jared Floryan | August 30th 14 | Mike Patton and the rest of Mr. Bungle were on the perfect kind of drugs upon recording their third and final offering, the unanimously-praised California. Although the album's 'newfound accessibility' can be debated for hours to come, it's no secret that the Eureka boys are still bringing the horror, serenity, wackiness, and variety. Mr. Bungle dabble in musical influences ranging from doo-wop, Hawaiian music, heavy metal, dance, and other styles during the majority of California - with the genre shifting in and of itself a little less jarring compared to Disco Volante. I don't think anything could top this album or its predecessor, to be completely frank.

| 4.5 superb | bananaoracle | September 9th 07 | Next to Disco Volante, this is my favorite Mr. Bungle album. While that might not be saying much do to the fact that they only released 3 albums as well as several demos, but California is still another great album by one of the more extravagant bands of the past decade. Once the albums starts with ?Sweet Charity? it doesn't let up in terms of excellent song writing and performance. One of Mike Patton's greatest achievements.

| 4.5 superb | BillyBrill | August 5th 22 | The most interesting and face-slapping palette of instruments and styles, and even more gobsmackingly executed, swiftly and deftly. Could?ve been twice the length, it feels like a playlist I?ve made rather than a single album recorded and released in the same name at the same time. Consider me utterly confounded and intrigued.

| 3.5 great | Gary STAFF | October 2nd 21 | Entertaining album, for sure. I get it why do people *love* it, but that's why I "just like it". Playful and exciting, but maybe it's a bit too much at once. I can totally see myself returning to this time to time, but it won't become a regular jam for me.

| 5.0 classic | XSebbyMcMuffinX | February 20th 21 | Indescribable. Literally. The only way to communicate the quality of this album is to tap into it's mentality, and inevitably scare off and confuse people who don't jump headfirst into accepting everything life has to offer. Mr. Bungle is a band that is known for mixing genres together that would not be expected; Whereas the previous album, Disco Volante, was peak weirdness in artistry... this album brings much more topical focus and dynamic cohesion, and overall responds to general expectations of modern music, making this easily the most accessible album from a band that seems to do everything they can to not be. Some of the topics covered throughout are pretty clear satire after you let them sink in. "Nobody wants to be a Mr. Bungle."

| 2.5 average | GamamJ | June 16th 20 | My (unpopularly) least favourite Mr. Bungle. I overall seem to be way less fond of these guys than most. Still, I enjoyed the debut for what it was (the craziest attempt to make weird music I have ever heard), and really enjoyed Disco Volante, an experimental fusion masterpiece. This album however sees Bungle try yet again, something entirely new, but I don't even know how to describe it. Much less in your face than previous efforts, it is much more accesible, and honestly I found it mostly uninteresting.

| 2.5 average | butcherboy | June 8th 17 | Patton just may be the greatest one-man marketing firm in America.. somehow elevated himself above the swill of the decade's music he was such a vital part of.. an operatic voice and hollow experimentation does not an artist make..

| 4.5 superb | Britch2tiger | January 15th 16 | I was experiencing an album out of my comfort zone, but this bombastic album playing on your ears soon turn into a grand
experience of varied tempos and masterful instrumentation patterns. Perhaps the best (and better consisted) album of Mr.
Bungle's discography.
Bump |
| 5.0 classic | FrozenZoo | September 10th 15 | Every song on this album is experimental and beautiful in its own way. The diversity of the songs amazes me.
The catchiness never wears. Together they paint a vivid picture of an odd, yet ingenious, group of musicians.

| 3.5 great | ItsMaxwell | June 11th 15 | The lyrics make no sense but it doesn't even matter because the music makes even less sense. But it's almost so little sense that you suddenly start realizing nuances that do make sense. It's fascinating. And I can't stop doing the bop ba ba haaaahs in "Sweet Charity".
Bump |
| 5.0 classic | ElviGemini | March 26th 15 | Can hardly believe this is still Mr. Bungle. Sure, tunes still sound definitely like Bungle but then tracks like "Pink Cigarette" or "Retrovertigo" make you second guess that.

| 0.0 | Lambda | February 7th 15 | California is an exceptional record. It is so crammed with details- including the artsy and complex "The Holy Filament" and the wacky "Goodbye Sober Day"- that it never gets boring. Every track has immense replay-ability and there is no weak spot on the album. Mr. Bungle's skill at combining several genres into one song is partly responsible for this. Every time you listen to the album you will find something you had not noticed before. The most accessible Bungle record, and perhaps also the best.
Bump |
| 4.5 superb | InFiction | January 27th 14 | Arguably their best, California maintains Mr. Bungle's signature sound of insanity and improves on it tenfold.

| 5.0 classic | Polyethylene | October 7th 12 | Mr. Bungle's third and final album was their weakest, but nonetheless an absolute triumph. The weirdest and best pop album ever recorded.

| 5.0 classic | Type2Diabeetus | November 4th 11 | The third and unfortunately the final Mr. Bungle masterpiece. Here, the band pleasantly surprises fans with a more pop influenced approach while still maintaining their goofy, unpredictable style that they have been known so well for. Mike Patton really shines here with some of the best vocal performances that he's produced since Angel Dust. The musicianship is unsurprisingly top notch as well.

| 4.5 superb | twiszted689 | January 24th 10 | Although considered Mr. Bungle's most "accessible" album, it still maintains the musical denseness and complexity (read:weirdness) that Mike Patton/Mr. Bungle fans have come to expect.

| 4.5 superb | Splatch | October 13th 09 | This album is awesome. A large cluster of unique, and accessible songs. Mike Patton's singing is spot on in this album.

| 5.0 classic | red0 | November 30th 08 | As far as rock musicians go, Mr. Bungle are the most talented musicians in the act. Their self-titled showed the band sticking to funk-metal too strictly, Disco Volante showed the band straying too far out of range, and California is the perfect mixture.
California is a beautifully bipolar album with it's fair share of aggression that mixes with any instrument, sampling, or technique you can think of. Patton's vocals are excellent, soothing, harsh, or whatever the song calls for. A truly magnificent album.

| 4.5 superb | SnackaryBinx | August 1st 08 | You want to shit your pants multiple times to the fucking weirdest thing ever? Look no further, this is extraordinary work, and is quite possibly the most fantastic piece of work ever made. They jump genres more than Crotchduster for christ's sake.

| 5.0 classic | SHOOTME | August 1st 08 | With Mr. Bungle, Micheal Patton achieves the maximum level of insanity that could possibly be attained by a person, and with Mr. Bungle's best album, Micheal Patton masters true musical insanity. Serj Tankian? totally pussy. Ozzy Osbourne? whimpy 5 year old with a stutter compared to the master of musical insanity of Micheal Patton. His music with Mr. Bungle contains several different parts and influences, ranging from pop to Death Metal. One I first heard of this, I thought no one with a brain would dare attempt such a stunt. But back then, I did not know that, if anyone could do it, it would be Mr. Bungle. The album starts out with Sweet Charity, which at first sounds melodic and simple, but by None Of Them Knew They Were Robots, we already start hearing death growls. The album is a mixture of all genres, and because Michael and his band are so talented, they managed to pull of the insanity while remaining incredibly musical and effective. One of the best albums ever made.
