| 3.9 excellent | Erwann S. EMERITUS | May 9th 23 | After the Ascension sessions, Trane couldn't go anywhere without Pharoah Sanders. He thus brings him in, alongside drummer Rashied Ali and his other classic quartet members, for another session that borrows as much from Ascension as it does from A Love Supreme. Spirituality still is present, but it's deployed through two sets of percussions and two saxophones, thus carrying an opacity built upon polyrhythms and atonality. It's nevertheless more "coherent" than Ascension, because it still possesses some more "virginal jazz" passages; ie traditional jazz that does not try to go beyond jazz, tone, rhythm, or melody. Meditations also is important because it is the last recording featuring legendary quartet members pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Elvin Jones. Thanks a lot boys: you were the wood upon which Trane's fire could burn.

An important one historically as this is the last album with Tyner and Jones, which makes me sad but all good things have an end. The first track is perhaps one of the spiciest Coltrane tracks yet ith 12 minutes of noisy free jazz that remains an enjoyable listen, especially 2 and more so 3 go back to more conventional, calmer jazz - though 2 retains some spice on the piano which is lovely. 4 summarises the record perfectly, starting on almost as much spiciness as 1 and evolving all through the track to unfold into decreasingly dissonant and ultimately very relaxing piano, continuing into the serene 5 with an incredibly smooth transition. The smooth transitions and this strong ending of the album bump it ever so slightly to a soft 4.3

Outside of the opening track, Meditations is short and sweet, giving the album more accessibility and space. I also really enjoyed the solos on this LP, including the crawling baseline opening of Love and the shimmering piano closer on Consequences. Overall, a great album and worthy entry in Coltrane's discog.
