5.0 classic | AtavanHalen | March 11th 12 | It's been said that actions speak louder than words, and it's rarely truer than in the case of Ocean Songs - a heaving, devastating and powerful work of art that is also, tellingly, wordless. The instrumental trio build from calm water lapping at one's feet right up to treacherous, crashing waves of sound - sometimes within the same song. There are so many stories to be told here, of love and loss and distance and such. The music says everything without a single lyric in sight. It's a feat that has been achieved in the past, certainly. Very few records, however, quite manage to translate with the level of impact that comes with Ocean Songs - if at all. Essential.

3.5 great | sassymarvin | September 28th 07 | Great album, but not the best one to listen to first. If you want something that will hook you in straight away, look elsewhere. But if you want something you can chuck on and relax to, then this is the one.

4.0 excellent | Henry100 | January 28th 14 | It's like looking on as something tragic transpires, but not feeling compelled to intervene. You just sit and watch. And it works out in the end. For post-rock, which so often courts the bombastic, this record displays impressive restraint. This is all very pretty and has some solid catharsis on offer. But crescendo-core it is not. It's too understated to evoke the infinite or inspire awe, instead it's almost parochial - could only be Australian. Docking a point because of length and some occasionally unmemorable passages.

3.5 great | NeutralThunder12 | July 25th 10 | "Ocean Songs" is definitely a unique sounding post-rock record from a unique post-rock band, Dirty Three. Only three members play on the album, and only three instruments are present; a guitar, a violin, and drums. I love the feel on this record, it's like a combination of 'pirate music', celtic folk, classical, medieval (if that is somehow a genre) and much more. The album's biggest downfall is it's slow beginning, and while most post-rock albums do have a slower beginning than most other albums from other genres, the problem here is that the arrangements themselves are ridiculously samey (and eventually they get kind of dull up until the highlight track) which can definitely be a drag. Despite this, there is no denying the fact that the album does have it's standout moments, and even a few standout tracks, sometimes the climaxes are completely chilling. The only problem is that Dirty Three sounds the same when they are ascending to those climaxes, but again, despite the samey tone of the 'rises and falls', the album is arranged beautifully, and for that, it gets a low 4. Dirty Three is definitely an interesting band, but one would wonder how a sound that's so eclectic at it's core could sound so samey at times. Definitely great relaxing music though, something that I can see myself wanting to listen to again at a later time.
