Despite being their least heavy album, and also the one that hews closest to traditional verse/chorus/bridge structure... these guys really nailed a more streamlined sound. Even the token Will Swan rap verse flows well within its song. Another solid listen, and a clear step up from Acceptance Speech.

This is Tillian's album 100%, no Jonny. Plus, have you heard those sexy bass lines?! Awwww yeah, that's my fetish.

Hey, it's DGD: playful guitars, crunchy bass, passionate vocals that alternate between ok-tier screams and kinda-eh clean vocals. Gotta say the guitar musicianship alone makes this one of their best 2010s records.

High 3 out of 10: OK, I love Dance Gavin Dance. I'm going to say straight up that "Acceptance Speech" is one of my favorite LPs in 2013, so you can imagine my excitement when I heard this was coming out. I pre-ordered it right away, as a matter of fact...and now I know never to pre-order something so quickly. Tilian's vocal performance was completely dumbed down on this, some of the instrumental sounds like a incomprehensible jam session, the production is way too polished, and the lyrics are beyond awful, even for DGD standards. They went from releasing my favorite LP of theirs to releasing their worst LP yet, in my opinion. Even the songs I liked (We Own the Night, On the Run, The Cuddler, and Lost) are kind of just solid DGD songs you'd expect to actually be their least best on a normal LP of theirs. I really hope they bounce back, because I cannot even stress how much this let me down.

The production is clear and the record is mixed well, but the songwriting does nothing for me. Every track just feels like a series of sections placed back and forth clean vocal and screamed, with little consideration for flow or dynamics. Because of this, they all blur together in a sea of guitar dweedles. And the clean vocals are just horrible. They are unbearably over-the-top and the melodies are from B-rate bubblegum pop territory. It gets points for the production and some of the instrumental sections, but overall Instant Gratification is obnoxious, sugary, pop-core nonsense with some ghastly clean vocals and lyrics. 1.8

Tillian's vox really bring this down for me. It's cool that the band finally feel settled into a sound, but it's not that progressive balls-to-the-wall sound they used to have. I just...I just miss Jonny.

The one biggest problem I had with Acceptance Speech was how inconsistent Tilian Pearson's clean vocals were; he had this odd tendency to either undersing or opt to only chew the scenery just a smidge, and in some people's cases, it wasn't helped due to the falsetto. In the end, the good on that album and the bad were 50/50. Modern post-hardcore unit Dance Gavin Dance stepped their game up a little with their newest album Instant Gratification, and the bandmates still know amusement when they see it. Tilian's singing is not as spotty this time around and his chemistry with harsh screamer Jon Mess has mostly improved, while the tight and ever so fun craftsmanship is pretty much a pleasure for sore ears. Now you'd think that DGD would be sent to Tree Village by many a robot with human hair after all this brouhaha hasn't subsided, but as luck would have it, the group's still down with Brown Town. Yeah, I should quit while I'm ahead.

I unno. I might be the only one who finds this thing kind of underwhelming and risecore sounding. it just seems like they dumbed their sound down into typical v-c-v structure and it's kinda bland compared to their older works. Like.. remember Happiness and how crazy Carl Barker was? Who the fuck is Carl Barker?!rI really hope this grows on me, cause sad.
