STP's masterpiece. The music is epic, and this is one record I'd listen to again and again.

Though not their best or most consistent effort- Purple deserves that honour- Core can rightly be called Stone Temple Pilot's greatest album. The album boasts three '90s classics in 'Sex Type Thing,' 'Creep' and 'Plush,' and while the band could never be accused of unrestrained originality, Scott Weiland ranks among the decade's most consistent melodicians. Weiland was never fully comfortable plugging the expanse between the DeLeo brothers' Sabbath-inspired riffs- though 'Wicked Garden' and opener 'Dead & Bloated' might beg to differ- but he's in his element here, demonstrating his versatility through the multi-tempoed 'Sex Type Thing' and 'Crackerman' and his expert melodic craftwork with 'Creep' and 'Plush.'

Unfairly and flat out erroneously labeled as a Ten copycat upon its release (yes I remember) time has proven that this debut album solidly stands on its own.

The debut of the altogether underrated Stone Temple Pilots. This album is chock-full of classics like Plush, Dead and Bloated, Sex Type Thing and Wicked Garden. You really can't go wrong with this.

Core is a solid debut from Stone Temple Pilots. The album has some of the most recognizable songs from the alternative era, displaying Scott Weiland's amazing vocals and consistent, if unremarkable instrumentals. The good songs so standout that it really highlights the filler in a bad way. Some of the lesser known songs tend to go on for very long, and don't offer too much variety to keep the listener engaged, such as Naked Sunday, Piece of Pie and Where the River Goes. The guitars on Core are tuned in some interesting ways, and the rhythm section is standout of tracks like Sin and Crackerman. Scott's vocals drew comparison to the singers in the big 4, but despite not being on their talent level, he does have his own voice. A good start for a band beginning to find THEIR voice. Best songs are Sex Type Thing, Wicked Garden, Sin, Creep, Plush and Crackerman.

Even after all these years, this album still packs all the punch as it had in the 90's w/ all the other big bands of the grunge decade (Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Bush, etc.). Will admit to only being a fan of a few of this album's songs before but after diving into this genre even further I've began to develop this compass for appreciating the better acts of the 90's. Such a great decade! Man this has been a tragic beginning for music this year. So many people are dropping. David Bowie, Lemmy (technically in Dec '15), and now Scott Weiland.
