Unia takes Sonata to a whole other level, both musically and lyrically. Some songs are catchy, some are the most uneasy-listening Sonata has ever created, like 'Under Your Tree' and 'Worlds Forgotten, World Forbidden', which means that they weren't trying to be more commercial. When I first listened to Unia I seriously thought that it was some kind of joke. They didn't sound like all their other albums. After listening to it again and again and again, I actually found myself enjoying the album and after a while, it became my favorite. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, the songs are carefully constructed and contain so much harmony and melody. I was kind of disappointed when The Days of Grays wasn't like Unia at all, and I hope they'll release an album like Unia somewhere in the future.

Unia sees Sonata Arctica experiment and begin what many consider the start of their descent. Though not without enjoyable moments, these seldom hold up for an entire track's length. The album's strangely progressive nature doesn't do it any favors outside of a host of unpredictable moments. However, there's a fine line between what's predictable and what's compelling, and Unia definitely gears more towards one, rather than presenting both in equal dosages.

Sonata Arctica take their first step into the area of more Progressive Metal. The change has hit everyone quite hard, and I don't think it shines quite as brightly as their previous offerings - it's certianly nowhere near as good as 2004's Reckoning Night.
It's... good. But just good.
