M'kay. Relying more on americana and alt-country than their next records, this is nice, but not tremendous in any way. It's relaxing though, as that dude seems to be chillin' pretty well in that pool of his. Matt's vocals are not on point yet (eg on The Perfect Song, the music is hinting at their future albums, but Matt's delivery makes it sound an Alligator b-sides), it all sounds the same, and the band didn't find their formula yet. So yeah it's nothing incredible compared to their next records, but it's m'kay.

The album is as clear and blue as the water on the cover. Simple jams that will sometimes remind ryou of Wilco, and get stuck in your head.

Honestly not too much of a far cry from their later material. It's got the elements that The National are known for and there are definitely good moments here, but it just doesn't quite hit the highs that the band would later reach. Not immediately memorable, but then again I've felt that way about all of The National's albums initially. Eventually they all grew on me with repeated listens.

It is incredible that an excellent band as The National had such a poor debut as this one, but what's more incredible is the huge leap forward they took from here to their next record. This is a bad record on so many levels, the production is terrible in some tracks, I'm not quite fond of its country influences and the overall feeling I get is of boredom, some songs go nowhere. Despite this there are a couple tracks I really dig and in the case of "Son" I think is one of the top 15 The National tracks.

The National's debut is just, kinda, there. It's okay. Matt rules on it, but theres not really anything to go back to besides John's Star. It's a solid, but never truly great album all the way through, but it's still worth a try if youre hardcore into the band like me. Bleh
