Though this album is often praised for being a wonderful concept album, at its core it is really just a collection of wonderful songs. Though it clocks in at 80+ minutes, it never seems to drag. There is essentially every aspect of The Who's greatness on this album, from the emotional outbursts of the final track, to the catchiness of "The Dirty Jobs" to the straight parody on "Bell Boy." It has a wonderful flow, where every song seems to be perfectly placed, adding to the overall feel of the album. A truly astonishing record that has stood the test of time. Only Love can bring the rain. A true classic.

In the discussion of storytelling albums/rock operas, I feel like we often forget about The Who, who always come with incredible high concepts for their albums and incredible instrumentations. For those who don?t know, this album is about a guy named Jimmy who suffers from Schizophrenia, and the 4 personalities he has are actually characteristics from each band member. It?s honestly a very cool concept, that leads to a really compelling story. Aside from that, Moon, Entwhistle, and Townshend absolutely shred their instruments, especially on songs like The Real Me, the title track, The Rock and Drowned. Those riffs are fast-paced, extremely engaging, and lead to a very fun experience. I also can?t pass the opportunity to mention Doctor Jimmy, the quintessential track of the album, that honestly hits like a truck.

This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite album, for both its musical content and complex, layered thematic ideas. This is The Who in confusion, the who telling its audience to grow up, the who pounding like they're live, with tight arrangements featuring synthesizers that sound legitimately good and not dated. I'll avoid flat out reviewing it to avoid my starry-eyed admiration.

The definition of concept album. Very complexed story involving the tragic life of a typical teenager and friction between the four band members. The music is incredible; strings, horns, guitar and especially drums and bass are exceptional throughout and fit the concept perfectly. Daltrey's vocals are much more powerful than on Quadrophenia's somewhat underwhelming predecessor Tommy. The closer "Love Reign O'er Me" is easily one of the most powerful and greatest songs of all-time. If anything is perfect, this is.

The Who's 1973 album is beyond a masterpiece. It even closes with the best song that the Who has ever written, Love Reign O'er Me. Hey, do you like Neil Peart? Well although it is obvious that Neil is a drumming machine, Keith Moon was doing what he did 10 years earlier.
