Beautiful melodies and harmonies alongside a fantastic drumming performance are the best parts of The Ark Work, while monotonous vocals and muddled production mar the overall potential.

Somewhere between a 3 and 3.5 with this one... there are some really interesting parts, especially
in the first half, quetzalcoatl is the albums centerpiece and strongest track, it represents an
interesting blend of influences and works well in a bizarre way. but songs like reign array lack
timing and effective songwriting, you cant do supernova like epic stuff for 11 minutes, it gets
tiring. the electronic songs are complete fails and the filler track just doesnt add anything.
after all solid effort, would recommend listening to it but its got some flaws

Overwrought, interesting, absurd, self-indulgent, bizarre. Don't like the vocals and I miss the relative
grittiness of previous releases. Definitely respect this more than I like it: when all's said and done, it's still a
ballsy work of . . . ark?

Liturgy's third LP is just plain bizarre. There really isnt any other way to put it. Almost all traces of black metal have be eliminated leaving you with a very interesting yet heavily flawed musical experiment. Some very interesting ideas are shown on The Art Work, only to be overshadowed by the atrocious vocal performance, a collection of out of place noises and the occasional meandering repetition.

Like often with Liturgy: props for trying! The blend of black metal riffs, avant-garde-slash-totalist approach, and glitchy parts at times manage to convey the kind of epic vibe HHH wanted to bring to the table - that only makes this a better album than Aesthetica. It doesn't achieve that feat constantly, though, thus being relegated behind H.A.Q.Q..

At first I thought they uploaded the wrong files on Spotify, but boy was I wrong, that was the album. I sincerely don't know what to say about this music, I listened to a lot of experimental and avant-garde stuff over the years, but this is more of a pretentious meta-ironic meme than an album. I'm surprised that they were legally allowed to put this thing on the market.

When everything comes together it all crescendos so very well, but outside of those brief
and far-between moments, it's mostly just a jumbled mess. There's a track here or there
that's interesting in itself, but then a handful of tracks afterward that just seem
pointless. If the band would continue this style on the next album and really hammer out
the kinks and hone their songwriting skills they could create a really interesting piece
of experimental math metal--but I think by now HHH has established that they and their
posse simply aren't interested in doing that.

To have the power to feed on crimson nectar, one must first and foremost analyze just what makes it so divided amongst its predators; I believe The Ark Work plays the same role. Transcendental black metal the album sure isn't, but ambitious and kinda sitting upon the creative tower it is. Liturgy mastermind Hunter Hunt-Hendrix's vocal performance almost ruins whatever sick enjoyment I can receive out of the record - and it's not that he's a terrible singer. The quality of his voice is just too monotonous to mesh very well with the otherwise amusing craftsmanship and unnerving production values on board here. "Quetzalcoatl," "Kel Valhaal," and "Haelegen" are pretty awesome, I'm not going to lie.

Nowhere close to the previous work. Some momentary bits of genius in a wash of confusion and half-baked ideas. Oh and the most obnoxious a-tonal vocals to be put on to an album in recent memory. The talent of the musicians and the sheer creativity of it makes it worth checking out,

This would be a strong 3.5 or light 4.0 if Hunter would have stuck with traditional black metal vocals and used his ...singing... sparingly. But instead there are no shrieks only his droning voice humming through out the whole album. Really fucking kills it for me.
