4.5 superb | Eakflanderyof | May 4th 10 | This is Mayhem's most quality output since De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Not only that but I would say this album is nearly a masterpiece. They're still showing black metal bands how heavy black metal should be played and with an avant garde touch.
Attila's vocals are better than ever. The man can do everything and really helps create the atmosphere of a lovely torture chamber. Hellhammer's performance is fantastic as usual. The speed displayed on this album (guitars and drums) is some of the fastest of any black metal band around.
All they had to do was ditch their terrible vocalist, Maniac, and get Attlia back to make another great album.

1.5 very poor | Goku | August 8th 07 | When I put this cd into my cd player, I was expecting to hear some extreme black metal like the Deathcrush ep or De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Wow was I wrong. This sounds like any stereotypical blackened death metal band. It also includes some lame chanting at parts.

4.5 superb | Cashman90 | October 16th 14 | Probably the most challenging album i have ever listended to in my life... Seriously spooky & sinister. The production quality gives it such an eery/creepy vibe. Despite myself listening to a shed load of death & black metal over the years something about this album just creeps the hell out of me & at times makes it challenging to listen to. It really brings out mental emotions of paranoia & fear at times & makes you think "how can bands write this stuff anymore". Highly recommend this album to anyone who thinks they can listen to the most extreme types of metal & not get amazed anymore. Truly a unique album that scares the shit out of me in a good way just like a jumpy horror movie can.

3.0 good | GamamJ | May 6th 20 | Mayhem continue completely reinventing themselves and put out another completely unique and weird record. I really struggled with the mix on this one as it is so bass heavy that the guitars are almost drowned out, and all you can hear is Hellhammer. Regardless, the music is incredibly weird and complex, which combined with Chisar?s unrivaled unorthodox vocals makes for a very cool experience.

4.5 superb | ManiacBlasphemer | September 25th 19 | One of the most difficult albums I have been listening to. It took me a few spins to grasp the concept and the overall songwriting behind this album. This is clearly an attempt to stray from the original formula of black metal, to innovate and refine. Of course, without the versatile and highly dynamic voice of Attila Csihar, this album wouldn't have been made. While Maniac is a good vocalist, his voice was not really suitable for this kind of avant-garde music, despite the fact that Mayhem did delve into experimental territory in previous works with varying degrees of success. Attila, with his usual bizarre vocals, gave a new dimension to the music and probably a new source of inspiration and creativity for Blasphemer. The main highlights are Wall of Water, Deconsecrate, the majestic Illuminate Eliminate, which is also the longest track on the record and Key to the Storms. Anti is also coming close, a solid song. The production, while it helps in building the oppressive, murky atmosphere of the album, doesn't do much favor to tracks such as A Wise Birthgiver or Psychic Horns, but it nevertheless somehow works in bringing the full potential out of the other tracks. Impressive work, something that can hardly be emulated. Even the members themselves could not make a similar album, Esoteric Warfare being more akin to Deathspell Omega than this one is.

3.0 good | zaruyache | January 17th 17 | black metal. I like how muffled and suffocating the production is here. Stylistically not my favorite thing, but the production is definitely unique.

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | January 7th 15 | Like a voluptuous whore hiding her true self underneath a throne in need of serious repairs, Ordo Ad Chao is a evil, sadistic album. It isn't a one-of-a-kind release, but legendary black metal band Mayhem pour disturbing blood in nearly every single skeleton's eye sockets with such a record. First you come for its intentionally-underproduced nature, and eventually your ears suddenly begin listening to Attila Csihar's creepy vocal performance.

4.0 excellent | SkapalPes | July 18th 14 | It takes some time to get into this album, because it is no easy listen. Not only because its rough production, but primarily because music itself. It is dark, apocalyptic and deranged (Attila..., he also wrote himself a lyrics, check Psychic Horns for example), technically challenging (drums are absolutely unbelievable here) and with no gives and takes in band`s artistic expression. As a result, they create one petrifying masterpiece of black metal... and word doom is also proper here, as the Wall of Water is getting nearer and nearer...
