5.0 classic | mx STAFF | March 24th 15 | Sufjan has spent the past eleven years fleeing the stripped-back indie folk of 'To Be Alone with You' and
'Romulus' in favor of more dramatic arrangements. Carrie & Lowell represents a stunning return to form.

But, because loss is his gain, he passes on towards eternity in undiminished personality, untaught by the history he has appropriated or by the timespacedout axes he has fused on electrobanjoautotunefolkorchestraguitar. His beaver is up. He is a ghost, a shadow now, the wind of his air conditioner or what you will, the vampire's voice, a voice heard only in the head of him who is the substance of his shadow, the son transsubstantial with the mother.

2.5 average | cjbizzlebizzle | December 31st 15 | Carrie and Lowell, perhaps the most universally acclaimed album of 2015 beside To Pimp A Butterfly, provides a harrowing experience of personal loss to soft folk and Sufjan's quiet vocals. Right away I must say this album was very underwhelming on a blind first listen (no prior Sufjan experience, no idea what the album was about). It was immediately clear the album was about loss, death, depression and both the vocals and lyrics conveyed a dark portrait of a person truly struggling; this alone is the great strength of the album. Extended research on the album allows one to empathize with Sufjan and it is a true feat to release such an intensely painful and personal experience to a wide audience. All that aside, the actual music and singing has all been done so many times over and depressing subject matter doesn't exactly drag a listener back to an album for more listening. Besides a few slight standouts the album is mostly forgettable folk guitar and synth below a monotonous signing style. Honestly if the lyrics were ignored I would think Sufjan was more confused than anything. Strong personal content and, at times, beautiful lyrics but weak musically. Perhaps I just don't "get it", oh well.

0.0 | Lol I Heard The New Lights Album Isnt On Spotify So Tundra Cant Add It To His Playlist | March 26th 15 | that would imply im being contrary for the sake of being contrary which is a useful deflection (or at least as useful as yaks go to deflection evident by his previous comment) that one might utilize if they are insecure enough about their feelings for an album to not be able to recognize its flaws and see how someone else might not like it. but that bullshit aside, my reasoning is sound - i was anticipating further flourishes into an area akin to Age of Adz which was the first Sufjan album I appreciated with its quirky and eclectic electronics and colourful soundscapes but alas this is but a regression to pretty standard indie folk stuffs with a distinct lack of the distinguishing characteristics that finally attracted me to sufjan with AoA and his collabs with son lux. The album could easily be characterized as derivative if not for the somewhat appealing atmospheric qualities that keep you clinging on to each song expecting some grand creative flourish before each songs end, but it just never quite happens leaving me less than satiated by the albums close. Album could have been a lot more if he hadn't kept himself refined to the inside of the box he fashioned for himself with albums previous to illonois but instead it just comes off as a 'nice' listen and not much more. is it sufjan returning to his roots, or sufjan failing to be so much more?! YOU decide!

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | April 26th 15 | If you've ever lost a close relative in the past or as of late, then there's bound to exist somebody who can sympathize with the trauma; singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, in this case, lost his mother to stomach cancer. Carrie and Lowell is angelic from a composition standpoint and quite a tearjerker as far as subject matter goes. The colorful production clashes with the raw sentimentality that circles around this album, which in turn is more or less a mild detriment to the feelings Sufjan's trying to convey here. However, he was able to pull off a recording that sounds the polar opposite of unnatural, and you can't help but applaud and weep in the process. The kinda sorta tl;dr version: The folk elements hovering next to the sadness is soothing enough to eventually grow on listeners who couldn't comprehend Carrie and Lowell during the initial run.

5.0 classic | LommyGreenhands | March 16th 15 | This is stripped-down Sufjan, but his emotional earnesty is at an all-time high here. On this
record he creates encapsulating, melancholy soundscapes through use of acoustic guitar and soft
electronics. This is one of the most atmospheric albums I have heard in years, and the sound he
puts forward perfectly accompanies the painfully honest and melancholy lyrics. This will be one of
the best records of the year.

5.0 classic | EK48 | December 27th 21 | this album brings back a version of me that slept within me for years, and finally emerges to play. albums dont make me cry, this one had me sobbing on the floor. it also brings to the forefront that one thing you'll need to experience during life is the death of others. it is simply unpreventable, and we need to come terms with it as people. the instrumentation is grand, and unforgettable, and frankly god, what album can top this? has there been anything created on this dear earth that can match the beauty?

4.5 superb | charlopiano | August 26th 20 | It took me quite a while to finally listen to this album and the tone of it is a big reason why. There's a specific mood you have to get in to listen to this and if you're in that mood it absolutely hits. Death With Dignity and The Only Thing hit hard. It's a really morbid album but it's kinda beautiful in that wayrI can't believe I only put an 8 to this thing.

4.0 excellent | lz41 | July 26th 20 | The boy in Sufjan Stevens who never grew beyond the grief of his mother's absence and illness meets the artist mourning her death. An uncomfortably and unremittingly sad album.
Bump |
4.6 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | January 23rd 20 | Best folk AOTD. Intricate guitar melodies, sweet and controlled vocal performance, gorgeous harmonies, the oh-so-emotional tale. What's more impressive is how subtle and elegant this release is. Other folk works (The Wild Hunt), or even other grand 2010s releases (To Pimp a Butterfly) are bombastic (even though they have their share of softer moments), and directly show you how good they are. Here, you gotta take time to apprehend this. And when it clicks, oh boy. This is more than a mere album; this is a man's life, regrets, and questions poured into 43 minutes.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Rik VII (sound-off ratings out of 10) | July 21st 19 | It's hard not to be captured by the rainy summer day nostalgia Sufjan indulges in on C&L. It's like flipping through an old photo book of his while he tells you his life story. Deeply personal, albeit musically one-sided, leading to me feeling a slight oversaturation of breathy indie pop before the album is over. While that does keep it from being from one of my favorites, it's definitely not enough to hinder it as one of the most personal and compelling albums of the decade and also a top 3 Stevens effort. - 8.5

4.0 excellent | commonist | May 21st 18 | 87/100. Soft, beautiful, ghostly. On this ode to his parents, Sufjan crafts an incredibly intimate yet distant record, combing his warm singing with icy production. Absolutely stunning work.
Bump |
5.0 classic | Risodo | March 8th 18 | Everything that is personal and sincere in the music world, is usually perfect. All the senses and human organs are connected to demonstrate the real face of the feeling of who writes the songs and their lyrics. Sufjan Stevens is incredible, i have always heard of the band but i snub for a while, more for lack of interest than for lack of will. How stupid i am to take so long to listen to such a genuine and perfectly sentimental piece. I prefer not to enter into the lyrics, because it is heavy stuff and must be felt rather than anything.
Bump |
4.5 superb | 3waycrash | January 21st 17 | A very vulnerable and intimate listen into Stevens's grief of his mother's passing. The album is stripped down of the lush music he filled his music, and in its place are gentle songs of mourning, regret, and remorse. As he once said, "This is not my art project; this is my life" which makes it all too real and heartbreaking.
Bump |
0.0 | BeneaththeDarkOcean | August 29th 16 | After the out-of-this-world musical progression and experimentation of The Age of Adz, Sufjan, when we needed him most, falls back into his own safe folkish routine where he started from. And that, people of Earth, is a crying shame.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | May 22nd 15 | Managing to still sound like a rosy-cheeked ghost-cherub at nearly 40 is a feat in itself, but the truly-beaming-accomplishment is songwriting that's simultaneously this sparse, powerful, and even catchy. Strewn with bereavement, animal metaphors, religion, mythology and retrospection, he seldom needs more than acoustic pluckings and piano taps to caress you like a thousand feathers and create an optimized aura of tenderness+melancholy.

4.5 superb | VengeanceCactus | May 11th 15 | God, this album is so fucking sad. It can really be seen as the polar opposite of the largely epic and joyous Illinois, as this record is quiet, minimal, and sad as shit. Jesus Christ, it's so sad.
