On the plus side, this album has a lovely bass tone, the intro is a lovely jam that feels like it preludes to a prog rock album, and nearly every track has the odd thrash metal riff moment that is kinda cool. The intro to 3 and 9 are quite nice. Apart from that, this is an extremely wankery record, fluctuating between thrash metal and speed/power metal (not my cuppa), with never great but sometimes ludicrous vocals that make you feel like you're being toldna fairy tale over some metal background, and the instrumentation feels generic, wankery and boring most of the time - bar the aforementioned odd nice riff. Nothing I'll come back to. 2.2

As great as this album was when it came out, 30 years later it hasn't properly stood the test of time. Now don't get me wrong, a lot of tunes here are still fresh and sound great, the production was very good back in the day and it is still good today as well, it is just that, as time passes by, this album became less and less memorable. 30 years ago I thought it was a masterpiece, on par with other thrash classics. Now I find it a bit lackluster. The album remains very technical, Waters being an exceptionally good vocalist and on this album, and the subsequent one he avoids the wankery. Randy Rampage is the main con of this album. His voice is screechy (cringy) and on the classic Alice in Hell tune he even attempts to be operatic in a power metallic way, which is almost comical. Nevertheless, the A side is stronger (track 1-4), with the B side being more pedestrian, with the exception of Schizos. Still a noteworthy thrash/heavy metal record with impressive guitar sound and solos.

While most thrash metal debuts often sound very raw this record is more polished and definitely more 90's sounding. Still it's an excellent album that not only shows aggressiveness but also sense of melody.

The Canadians, from an accessible and commercial point of view, led the pack of the technical thrash metal wave, and one of the gems of the era was The Jeff Waters Band debut. Opener "Crystal Ann" is a soothing acoustic track that deceitfully opens into the spiraling title track which is rampant with tempo changes, buzzsaw guitar riffs, and a menacing atmosphere of the titular character's fears and insanity taking its toll. The grim, riff-driven aura continues on in the form of technically accomplished hard hitters "Burns Like a Buzzsaw Blade," "Wicked Mystic," and the ferocious closer "Human Insecticide" and through tunes with calmer sections like "Schizos (Are Never Alone)" and "Word Salad." Waters interest in writing about schizophrenia and the human mind may not have been fully realized through memorable yet unimpressive lyrics, the the topic matters are anchored by the flawless instrumentation and song structures. Having already perfected their formula, Annihilator created both a career highlight and a genre highlight in Alice in Hell. A genre classic.

Though in no way groundbreaking or original - this album is an essential thrash/heavy metal album. Flawless musicianship, great songwriting; there's really not much to complain about on Alison Hell and I'd definitely bump this up to a 4 if I was more into thrash and speed metal so the rating is, as always, somewhat subjective.
