When I first heard that Snakes & Arrows was going to be released I got all hyped up for it. On release date I hurried home and locked myself in my room for hours listening to it. At first I didn't know what to think It was good, similar to their old stuff but there was nothing special. But after a few listens of the album I was hooked and everytime I listen to it from now I find something that I think makes this album even more amazing. This album shows Rush in all their glory. Even after 30 years Rush still amaze me.

Very plodding. Feels like they are going through the motions. I didn't feel or connect with too many songs, although the instrumentation as always is superior. The instrumental tracks (three of them) are the best parts.

This is another one of these albums that I buy just for one song and enjoy the rest of the record, while still not as much as the track I bought it for. The one i'm talking about is "The Larger Bowl" my favorite Rush song

I like this album, but it felt like Rush was trying a little too hard to sound retro. "Far Cry" opens as if it were classic 1970s Rush, but quickly dives into the "wall of guitar" sound and Geddy's gimmicky double-tracked vocals. It also sounds to me like he's at the top of his vocal register throughout this album (as well as Clockwork Angels). It also seems like they're trying hard because there are two instrumentals on one album, which is atypical for Rush. I love both of the instrumentals very much ("Hope," an acoustic acapella, and "Malignant Narcissist," a bass guitar-driven rampage). I still think this album has some coherence to it, and the songwriting is much improved from its recent predecessors. But aside from the two instrumental tracks, it kind of felt like I was listening to the same song throughout the entire album (albeit a very good song).

Rush is showing an uncanny ability to age gracefully. Yes, many bands have tried to do the same, but these guys just kill at it. This album cannot even be called mediocre because it isn't. The endurance these guys have shown is truly admirable.

The song The Way the Wind Blows really stood out for me, and the instrumentals were largely okay. Faithless offers an explicit announcement of what I imagine are Neil Peart's spiritual beliefs. Unlike what some are saying though, to me this album does not sound like their ones from the 70's or even invoke them at all.

Despite being initially disappointed by this release, I think if any Rush fan gives it more than a couple spins it'll set its hooks in 'ya eventually. After numerous listens and hearing the album live on its tour, the full scope of this record finally hit home to me. The differences between this and other rock-based Rush albums are subtle but vast, and there seems to be a pretty big emotional connection. Ramblings aside, the music on this disc is another fine example of a legendary act.

I think that I am one of the few people that actually liked Vapor Trails more than this one. I was a little bit let down when this came out; but it's still Rush goddamnit, and these guys are the best.
