To many this may seem an exercise in excess, a chore to listen to, and a waste of time to get into to. That's them. For me, this is the pinnacle of sound, the peak of instrumental performance, the epitome of elemental fusion, the album to end all albums. Never in my life have I heard a collection of music during which I was completely and gleefully engaged every single second I was listening. There was always a boring section, a weak track, an oddball waste-of-space filler, ect. Not here. Moonsorrow has managed to change the way I perceive, no, not metal, but music itself, what it truly means to me, and what it can truly be: all-encompassing, emotionally stirring, mentally entrancing, and, ultimately, moving, in every possible way one can be moved. Everything I listen to from now on will be judged against this standard. This may not tell you whether or not you will like this. But I hope I have told you why I think this is the greatest music I've ever heard.

What makes this album so much better than most released this year, is the ambition of the band. They have quite clearly played their hearts out on this album, the songs are beautifully written and played perfectly, there are too many stand out moments in both songs to mention and after listening you end up feeling like you've just read a great novel. What really actually astounds me about the writing on this disc is the feeling of continuity and various thematic elements that ring true in several parts of one song, and then the other. Not to say that the songs sound exactly the same, but there?s a tinge of meaning and connection between the songs that make sense and are able to relate to one another. Trying to explain why this album is such a majestic triumph is like trying to explain why getting to the top of everest is such an overwhelming feeling, eventually, all you can say is you; have to experience it for yourself.

Didn't like it at first, listened to it one day late at night alone in the dark and as soon as the last 8 minutes of the first track came on, I knew it was a masterpiece. All the riffs are great catchy, memorable, etc. It does a great job with creating a wall of sound and making no part seem boring (Once it grows on you). And parts like the lonely guitar at the beginning or the depressing yet bombastic chorus(?), the last 3 minutes of the first track that's repeated, help you imagine a dark, destroyed, and mysterious world. My favorite album of all time.

A contender for the best songwriting in all of heavy metal. Henri Sorvali outdoes himself on this album, painting a stunningly vivid picture that refuses to waver throughout this masterful auditory journey. Two 30 minute songs pass by as though they were five minutes. Not a single songwriting mistake or compromise to be found here, with excellent musicianship to boot. All that on top of Moonsorrow's absolutely amazing, authentic approach towards black metal with folk influences, and the unparalleled atmosphere they manifest with the instrumentation.
